Thanks for the instructions (and the picture especially!). I think at least I now understand how the axle hub works, so I should be in better shape to get it off. Jeff is loaning me his hub puller, so I should be ready to go with the removal.

I like the brake drum concept, too. Seems pretty clever to me. That 1/8" flat stock goes between the flipped drum and the hub, correct?

I was actually looking for a hub puller myself as I'll need to pull the backing plate from my rear brakes to replace the adjuster, does anyone know what size I'll need for a 67 sprite? I see up to 5 inch or 6/7/8 inch.. The car is out of state, so I can't measure, and would like to have the puller waiting for me next time I head up to work on her.

I suppose if you are careful you could use the reverse drum trick without damaging the drum.
 
I think you'll find as I have, that the reversed drum and a large mallet will remove the hub. Turn and pound on the drum. You wont hurt it.
 
A slide hammer works in a pinch....

opposite studs with a nut and a 3/8" i.d. washer on backwards.

Plan "B" is a plug ....stepped so as to fit in the axle tube and center drilled for the puller point. Two jaw puller that can get behind a 5" diameter hub.

Center nut torqued to about 80' # on reassembly.

Is that standard on all sprites or just the BE? I've got a MarkIV (67) would it be the same?
 
That's how I got the drum off in the first place, a few well placed wacks with a rubber mallet /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

all Spridget housing hub nuts are the same size.
One is LH (on the left) and the other is RH thread.
