You could increase compression with the higher octane to make more power, but it wouldn't reduce the increased consumption. There is less energy available in a gallon of Ethanol (E-85) than there is in a gallon of gasoline. Octane has nothing to do with the potential energy. It has to do with controlling the rate of burn. You would still have to use more Ethanol (E-85) than Gasoline to move a vehicle the same distance.
