You could increase compression with the higher octane to make more power, but it wouldn't reduce the increased consumption. There is less energy available in a gallon of Ethanol (E-85) than there is in a gallon of gasoline. Octane has nothing to do with the potential energy. It has to do with controlling the rate of burn. You would still have to use more Ethanol (E-85) than Gasoline to move a vehicle the same distance.

there is NO magic....

corn takes energy to grow and process
elecrtic cars need uhhh electric from powerplants etc
hydrogen needs to be produced by electricity

solar and wind power have a chance but right now the cost makes payback in the 10-20 year range ,

Nukes work great , but the spent fuel has a half life of thousands of years and one day will be a big problem becausde no one can say what will contain it for all that time :frown:

we will go down the wrong path many times before we find something that works....

Pilgrim's Pride Corporation on Wednesday announced it will close a chicken processing complex and six of its 13 distribution centers in the United States. None of the impacted facilities are in Texas. Company officials said the action was in response to what they deemed a crisis facing the U.S. chicken industry from soaring feed-ingredient costs resulting from corn-based ethanol production."Our Company and industry are struggling to cope with unprecedented increases in feed-ingredient costs this year due largely to the U.S. government's ill-advised policy of providing generous federal subsidies to corn-based ethanol blenders," said Clint Rivers, president and chief executive officer

One could use solar or wind to generate electricity to be used in an electrolytic system to create hydrogen for next to nothing once the intial costs of the wind generator and/or solar collectors (optimally both, since when there is no wind, solar could be used and hydro-electric generation could be an added source) are paid for!!! It is conceivable that the user would be totally independent from any power grid, once the technology is fully developed, and therein lies the hold-up! The existing power-providing infrastructure will resist its development!!!

Many years ago (late '50s/early '60s) my father was ahead of his time, we lived in a coastal area (hence on-shore and off-shore breezes morning and evening), beyond the existing power grid and our house was powered by a 12 volt windmill/generator (probably Lucas!) that was backed up by a 4 cyl. diesel generator for when there was no wind. All the lighting in the house was 12 volt, and the refridgerator ran off a transformer! As I said this was 50 years ago and it worked with primitive technology by today's standards. The point is, it CAN be done!!

Hi Mike,
In my little corner of the world, people like your dad are almost non-existent. Won’t find anyone around here making their own power and if they tried, the neighbors would probably complain. So here walk a bunch of consumers that are waiting to be handed the new power already packaged with a warranty. Sad really.

My wife has been complaining about food costs since the Ethanol programs have moved corn away from food into energy. So many of our food products use corn in ingredients or for feed. Who knows, soon there will be a great corn shortage and we will need to use petroleum products to make up the difference.

The same here. We have strong, constant trade winds. The folks here
always vote down any attempt at wind power. (eyesores)

This past week is was announced we will soon be constructing our very
first ethanol plant.

A tiny, mountainous island with extremely limited farmland and we are
gonna build an ethanol plant? I wonder how sand and rock is rendered
in an ethanol plant? Maybe we will impost the raw material from China??

Somone mentioned the price of corn due to ethanol production, Just wait! It isn`t over yet! Wheat is next in line to take a hike! {actualy it is happening as we live and breathe} Soon a $4.00 loaf of bread will be in our future.

At today $3.70 per gallon- I'm having me some personalized poverty!!

It now costs me more $$ to <span style="font-weight: bold">drive</span> to the restaurant than it
costs for a simple meal.

Just wait Dale, the meal will catch up soon, but by then gas will have jumped again too!! :eeek: Just heard it jumped to $110 a barrel today! :rolleyes:

All the corn fields I knew as kid in western NJ are now growing houses by the thousands.

Ahh but who cares. We can make money today. What am I doing about global warming - buying all the real estate in Greenland that I can so I can make a killing selling it when the ice melts (said VERY Sarcastically.)
