Mechanics. The mechanic deals with the service writer, who deals with the customer. You are paid by commission. How many hours you get paid for a repair is determined by a book, which book is determined by if it is warranty or not. Factory Warranty books pay alot less time to do a job than say the Chilton book pays for the same job, non warranty. Here is an example of a conversation at a Buick dealership many years ago. 2 mechanics with nothing to do on a rainy Friday morning, watching another mechanic doing a state inspection. I was one of the watching mechanics. The mechanic doing the inspection pulls the front wheels and says, "it needs struts and brakes", the other watching mechanic says "you have enought brakes left to choke a horse", the mechanic doing the inspection says "I have a wife and kids to feed". Struts and brakes are very good paying jobs. In other words, you may do the job in 4 hours, and get paid for 6 or 8. Warranty, you may only be paid 1 hour, even if it takes 6 or 7. This is/was common place in auto repair, it ain't going to stop. You don't do any work, you don't get paid, its all about how many book hours you do, not how many hours you work. No hours, no pay. Also, your hours are from 7:30 to 5:00, but you are not paid by those hrs., you are paid by how many book hrs. you do. Also, 35 yrs. ago, a mechanic got half of the labor charged the customer, now, maybe 15-25%, per hr. In other words, if the dearlerships hourly rate was 8 bucks an hr. in 1972, the mechanic got half. So, the service writer and mechanic got creative to get a fair amount. Turns everybody into a "team player". Service work is crooked, medical, cars, boats, TV's, it's crooked. If you are not a "team player" they will run you off. The other side of the coin, there is not enought work to go around, there are too many of everthing. Commission turns people in to crooks, as it was designed to do. The service manager, now what do you think pay his based on? Well, he gets a cut of the hrs. the mechanics do, so, he/she will encourage the mechanics to sell, sell, sell.
