TR2/3/3A Differential Side Gear Backlash

I need some advice on setting the differential side gear backlash. With the original thrust washers the backlash measures around 10-12 mils. The service manual does not list a spec, but this seems a bit high to me. So I ordered replacement planet gear thrust washers with minimum thickness available of 0.056" (the originals measured 0.042" thick). With the new washers, backlash is essentially zero and the resistance when turning the gears is about the same. I'm not that confident, but thinking this is probably okay and will wear in quickly. Any thoughts?

I would never have thought to be worried with this. Unless you have zero traction on one wheel and spin the other for a long time, these gears don't do very much work. If you are just putting back used gears, I would stay with whatever was there.

The later service manuals for IRS cars list a spec for the pinion gear lash. It's the same differential. Don't recall the exact number, but it's close to zero with fresh washers. Since you have the carrier out of the housing, resetting ring and pinion lash and pinion bearing preload would be time well spent.
