Dash refurb

Re: electrical gauge choices

Test fit.
Looks good. Kinda more correct no? I think the black dash sets off the steering wheel better.

Re: electrical gauge choices

Now, That's more like it....

No longer lookin to pull a couple of skiers wherever you go, huh?

Re: electrical gauge choices

Hey, there's an idea, an amphibious Midget.....hmmmmm Wonder what powerplant you'd need to pull skiers.....

Re: electrical gauge choices

Obviously the engine out of a Hillman Imp- same one that "powers" (if you could call it that) the Amphicar.

Hee Hee, the Amphicar couldn't even pull computer generated skiers .

When my wife and I were engaged, and for a while after we got married, we had the use of a 1966 Imp van owned by her father. One day we were accelerating out of a roundabout onto the A34 in Newbury, England. I had the pedel flat on the floor as hard as I could push it. Engine whining, gears grinding, wings flapping, the interior of the car filling with fumes from the loose, rattling engine cover....then we got passed by a bloke on his 10 speed bike. :nonono: "Ring, Ring" - tip of the hat, and he left us behind.

He obviously thought it was funny, my wife thought it was hilarious......... I thought it was time to go to the pub... So we did..

Re: electrical gauge choices

I just had to cobble things together dispite not having new bits. I have some issues to iron out but I did go live last night and most things tried to work.
On the turn signal warning lamp, is it the green bulb holder from the harness in that area? Plugged into the long amber sleeve? It is not on the wiring diagram that I can see. My turn signal right side works but left doesn't, neither triggers the warning light though. (these needed attention before I did the dash, bad ground somewhere I think).
All else seems fine so far. Whoever suggested painting the back of the dash white, thanks! That helps to see things.

Addendum
soldered a wire on the bulb holder and ran to ground, thinking the original must have been grounded through the bulb holder fitting somehow, the one I have is all plastic. Works a treat now. Must have helped make the flasher happy as all is blinky and bright again.

Re: electrical gauge choices

Speedo cable was routed by PO through firewall up by the battery, had to snake it over to attach (now that speedo is in proper left side position, PO had tach and speedo reversed). I figured the cable was originally routed through the hole next to where the steering column comes through the foot well, up by the accelerator pedal. I rerouted through there, much better straight shot. Hopefully that makes the speedo happy again. Can't test, fog rolled in. Got a good ground to the fuel gauge too and it also works again. Getting there. Used a spare blinker switch as a wiper switch for now until I can score another proper one. Works. Test drive earlier today, how fun is this? (until all systems went dead through a turn, took all of 2 minutes to realize I didn't tighten the ground cable on the battery very well and it popped off, shoved back on and motored on down the road, still haven't been stranded!)

Re: electrical gauge choices

Okay, speedo cable "modded" with a spacer and a slight trim of the rounded off end. Speedo works. Wiring done on the gauge lighting, all light up nice now. Dual bulbs on tach, speedo, fuel and oil/temp gauges quite viewable, much improved still not "bright" but good enough. Now for the order for proper starter pull/choke pull/wiper switch and something in the washer pull/push spot. Sweet. No bright headlight warning light yet for some reason and the blinkers are weak but all in all, decent weekend of progress.

Steering wheel/column line up

I'm to the point where I'll need to start to worry about getting the horn push to work again. Right now the steering column is slightly off center in the dash/column surround hole. I'd think for the horn brush to slide nicely around the slip ring it would have to be quite perfect. Is this a case of adjusting the dash fitment on the car or slightly shimming the column somewhere? I'd guess tweaking dash position, right?
BTW two seconds messing with the ground connection and blinkers are fine. Little car is running awesome and life is good.

I I used some spray adhesive. SIA 65 as recommended by a guy at hardware store (a REAL one NOT Lowes or Home Depot). ....
So, it worked really well, this spray was great, I gave the dash and vinyl a pretty heavy coat, waited about 10 minutes until if felt dry and stuck 'em together, I was a tad off the mark, more puckers around the edge then I hoped for but not as bad as I feared. Glue grabbed amazingly. Pulled over the edge and pressed it down and it held. Hopefully it's "tight" enough. Looks very good so far.

Okay, first couple of really warm days and that glue failed miserably. It's a mess. I'm bummed.....DON'T use that SIA 65 unless your car won't see temps above 70 and sun.

I know others swear by it but I have had no luck at all with spray adhesive - likely just me but, contact cement saves me every time.

PERFECT for the Seattle area- it got up to a sizzling 64 degrees today! (come-on Summer!!)

The stuff I used wasn't cheap either and was recommended and at first it worked great, grabbed and held super. But, sitting in the sun: poof glue let loose. I'll not try a spray adhesive again, going back to contact adhesive I guess.
