Daimler SP250 restoration

I think it's going to take longer than I thought.

Always does!

Used to say to clients: "If you're in a hurry we don't want to do the project. We do it RIGHT, not FAST. It takes as long as it takes."

Leave 'em alone and wait for the results. Worth th' wait from what I can tell from here.

Yup, I was hoping for late summer or fall. Looks like it may be the four year plan, not the three year plan though, I suspect.

Now that I'm in the 5th year of my 2 year resto, believe that it could take longer than you thought

Visited mine Thurs and am getting a little excited about the prospects of having it by July. The Toyo 5-sp is successfully connected both front and back (the AU shop [/i][/b]finally sent a bell housing that would mate to my SP backing plate. This after they sent another wrong one -exact match to the first wrong one. And even better, ran the starter (coil wire disconnected) and the engine turned over for the 1st time in 20 years. Can't wait to see the cloud of mystery oil that gets blown out the pipes when it actually fires up for the 1st time.

My next step will be to trailer to the trim shop for interior installation. When...keeping fingers crossed for soon.

Have you recent pictures? I'd like to see how it looks now.

And what year Toyota transmission did you use?

Didn't take any pics this trip, and the ones I have from earlier were in the back of the shop and don't show much. My avatar is probably the best of what the recent car looks like.
I don't remember what year, came from a Celica and I "think" early 2000's. I bought it on fleabay; will try to find the receipt.

Seriously! That fits? I think I've heard of people using early 1980s Supra transmissions.

If it is a five speed, that's good. The six speed Celica transmission (I believe) is the one which is very easy to mis-shift (and blow up important things).

Doesn't that make it a Daimlota?

<scuttles back under th' rock>

aye, cap'n.

That's great. There was someone here in States racing one in vintage with the 4.5; got away with it for about a year and then someone thought to take a closer look. But...he did really, really well while it lasted. As an originally auto spec car, was quite rare. What is the Chassis number; is it listed in the SP register??

Chassis number is: 139074. It's a New Zealand export, and was also originally auto. But one strange thing, it says that the car was first registered in 1982, but also says it hasn't been registered previous to that. Any suggestions why?

Interesting. My dad utterly munched 2nd gear (first picture). First gear had been replaced, because he munched that.

Engine's together, been handported. Engine and transmission go into the chassis today.

SWEET!!!

My Oh My, that is really nice!!!!!!!! Had mine at Stowe for the "Invasion" in Sept., then back to shop for finishing details. Picked it up on Oct. 30th so we could do a day long club drive on 31st...gassed it up on the way home, parked it in garage and noticed a stream of dripping gas underneath. Found the tank leaking at the seam where top & bottom halves join. Used fuel pump to get it down below half way point and took it back to shop. Still hoping to have it finished this year. Love the 5-speed, will take a little time to adjust to the feel and throw.

Thanks, to both comments!

It is coming along.

I wonder if I will regret not doing things like rack and pinion, five-speed, etc.

I wanted the car just as it was when my father drove in it.

I don't think it should be too much of a problem though, since it will be light use, and the traffic here isn't very bad (city of about 250,000 people).

I used to live in a city of ~6 million. I don't think I'd want to drive/own the vehicle there.

I can imagine trying to parallel park, wrenching the Dart wheel around with the maniacs bearing down on me, honking horns, in a city that size, plus the crazy tailgating and aggressive driving there, vs the sort of large small-town existence I have now. Should be fine.

besides, in Saskatchewan corners aren't exactly an issue.
