Car moving/transport company suggestions?

Can any recommend a good transport company to deliver a car from Columbus, OH to Olympia, WA? I've used DAS in the past and they were horrible.

Looking for the right combo of great rate, plus pick-up/delivery within a reasonable timeframe.

I'll also be writing about the car and its transport here in my weekly column.

Thanks!
Sam

Don't know anything about the company he just used to move an MGB GT from Pennsylvania to Georiga, but Chip Blankenship was most pleased with their service & price...they kept him appraised of the car's location throughout the move & were on time with delivery....here's his email: ccblankin@netzero.net

He's a pilot for one of the airlines so if you need his cell phone, PM me.

I've used two companies I would recommend.

Reliable Transport has moved two cars for me. One from Atlanta and one from Alabama, both to Los Angeles. Both cars arrived ahead of schedule and were delivered by husband / wife teams who were car nuts. Great attention was paid to the safety and well-being of the cars during transport and unloading.

The other outfit was TFX International. They were very friendly and the driver was a great guy. The car did arrive a day late but it wasn't their fault. Seems the delivery before me said there was room to turn the truck around, but when the driver got there it was a very narow road. So he had to back the truck out..... 20 miles!!! And it was a twisty mountain road, too.

Another company I've heard spoken highly of is Horseless Carriage. They specialize in collector and exotic cars. I have no personal experience with them though.

Just be sure you don't use one of the brokers. Call the transport company directly for the best service and price. Also, go with an enclosed trailer if you can, unless the car is a bit rough and you don't care about rain, hail, road debris, etc.

That's what Chip said his driver told him - he has direct contact numbers & said going direct can save several hundred dollars.

Not only that, but if the sh*t hits the fan then you're stuck dealing with a middle man. It ain't worth it. Make sure the transport company uses their own trucks.

My buddy used Horseless Carriage to move his 67 Shelby GT500 from here in Jersey to Charlotte NC when he moved down there. According to him they did a good job, delivery was on time and the car was perfect, no damage or issues. He said they were a bit more money than some other places but they had a better rep.

Decided on Nationwide Auto Transport. I talked to a bunch of direct carriers, as well as brokers, and these guys were by far the least expensive, but also are door-to-door and have insurance converage. Not cheap at $1095, but that's still over $100 less than the closest bid.

The car already has some rock chips, and I'm planning on driving it, so I'm going open. (it was $900 more for closed.) Usually the trucks like to put the classics in a position where they're least likely to get sprayed.

I'll make you all wait for that one /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I want to make sure I see it and like it before getting everyone excited about it. But don't worry, Jim, if everything works out, I'll post about it. (Maybe picture plus a sound file /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

Doug and Scott,
You must have mistaken me for someone with money!!! I'd have to take out a second mortgage for a 365 GTB/4 or a Cobra...then my wife would leave me.

At least it's good to know that you guys know me extremely well, because all those are cars I'd love to have.

BTW -- Someone is pretty close /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

308 GT4? That's about the least expensive ferrari I can think of.

Actually at this point we've all listed most of my wish list too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

...and it has to be a ferrari (maybe a 308 or 328), because of the part about posting a sound file /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Unless we're way off, and your getting the new XK, or an Aston. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Jim,
Thanks to Cars.com, seemingly no newspapers do their own local auto pages anymore. I've been really lazy about putting up any new stories on my own web site, but maybe I'll do that in the next week or two.

In the mean time, if you haven't read the story I wrote on the LeMay Museum's '70 Charger, that's on their web site www.lemaymuseum.org in the news/publications section (something like that.)
