"We" got it back from the show with a little help from a tow truck. I will leave the gory er...I mean glory details to Paul. Yes- that was steam...


Was good to see some new faces though I was not able to bring my car, Paul was kind enough to get me home after being dropped off by the wife on the way down from NH.
 
I'm not sure what caused it, as it idled for 10 minutes twice before we left with no issues. I decided not to chance any engine issues when it overheated the second time and just used my AAA Gold cad to flat bed it home.

The right side fan does not work, so I have to find what melted those wires together.

Don, it was a good day, but a frustrating one as well. I chose to focus on the good, rather than the bad when I got home.
 
Paul -

Check the wiring that travels along the upper brace above the radiator. One of those had been pinched after I removed and replaced the radiator a while back, and I had to replace it. The way the wires are run, it's easy to foul them when doing any work up there.

The wires that I found that were melted, well actually the "brown" was melted to the insulation of the yellow/black on the "fan side" of the connector. The fan is not seized and spins freely, so it may be fine, but I will check that side of the wiring which you suggested.

I picked up a new radiator cap and hopefully that will be the culprit in this whole overheating affair. If it's bleeding off too soon, that may be the cause of the water being spewed out after a half hour of driving. The one fan should keep it cool enough to not over heat, but if I'm losing coolant and it gets low, nothing but coolant will fix that problem, so I need to fix the pressure and coolant loss first.

The drivers side carpet is bone dry, the oil is clean and right at the full level and there is no white smoke out of the rear, so it has to be going out the expansion overflow for a reason and that would most likely be the cap.

If not, then we go to plan B.
 
Just remembered: Check the fuse that's located in the passenger footwell, near the large multi-connector up behind the carpet along the splash panel. That inline fuse, I believe, is for the passenger side fan. It was there when I bought the car, and not sure, but think it was added by a previous owner.
 
Thanks Mickey. That's good to know as the other two fuses are fine. I checked them yesterday. If this brown wire did short out, it may have popped that in line fuse you pointed out.

I've found that my car has a pretty fine balance between having the overflow full enough not to trigger the low coolant sensor, and so much that it vents the excess.
 
Darrell, that also is good to know, but this is not a simple matter of dumping the excess, but rather a large amount of the entire coolant in the car.

I bought two new caps, one with a flip up release and one without. In the past, I've avoided the flip caps for reasons such as this and I hate to admit that it took a gentle reminder from a friend to suggest checking the cap first.

Some days I feel that I've been away from turning wrenches for too long and some days it feels like not long enough. Do you have any preference?
 
Hi Paul,

It is amazing how much 1/4 of the overflow volume can coat the wheel well, but it sounds like you have something else going on.

When I was looking at this, I replaced the cap that came on the car (without the flip up release) with a new one (16 lbs) that did have it. I was thinking the cap was causing it to vent, but the new one behaves like the old one. I may take both and get them tested, just in case. But it was more of an annoyance, as I had a little coolant leak (return hose to the water pump), so couldn't overfill the overflow. I replaced the hose this weekend, and all seems well (though I again vented some fluid this morning, from overfilling).

It is just a little strange for me dealing with the expansion tank concept, every other car I've had always had an overflow tank (even my 4A).

OK, I have both caps and I can try one or the other, so that will be out of the way. Exactly how far up do you fill the expansion tank when all is said and done?

So far I've found about half-way seems to be the sweet spot.
