BN-7 Price

I vote for Randy's assesment... Bad 1st gear.. Once got into a "discussion" with an owner of a car I looked at. After I mentioned the noisy first gear he said "NO>>THAT"S HOW THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO SOUND!

And thats when the fight started!!

My BN7 isn't noisey in 1st gear. Probably because that's the way they are supposed to sound. If that's the case I don't think I will bother trying to fix it.

Although the owner's advice not to use first gear could be a sign of trying to cover up the sound of a gear going bad, he could just be describing the way a lot of drivers take advantage of the Healey torque to avoid using the relatively short first gear. Nice looking car and I'd follow the advice above and have it checked out by a specialist.
 
Those pictures look good but do not show the critical areas that separate a $30,000 car from a $50,000 car. $50,000 is top dollar for this model in number 1 condition in a private sale. At auction, with all the buyer's premiums figured in, a number 1 condition car may bring $60,000. But until I see under the hood and the underside of the car, I really can't tell. Given that this car has a dent and some excuse for first gear, I'd say the target price is somewhere lower than $50K.

My BN7 has always had a noisy very low first gear. I never use it except for maybe up a ramp onto a trailer.

O.T., as far as this thread is concerned, but that noise could be telling you to renew the layshaft bearings (and likely, the layshaft itself).

As those little needle rollers wear away the surface of the layshaft, it allows the laygear to move away from the 1st/3rd motion shafts, increasing the opportunity for wear and destruction.

Just saying...
 
50 K seems for this car, althoughnit does look good. A dealer in CT sold a similair car last summer for 32 K , hard top, matching numbers. Be sure to check the engine numbers especially the starting letter, Also the VIN on the firewall is not always correct, if possible see if there is a heritage certificate, it will identify the car at it's start. A BT & , 1960, sold at auction in Greenwich last June for 35 K,Top shape, so tne owner got less after commissions.
 
My best advice, as a follow up on this car, is to give the seller a deposit based on your inspection and finding regarding the authenticity of the car as far a numbers go. The $ area you are talking about is approaching investment grade for these cars. Asking prices sometimes reflect the buyers purchases made when the economy and car values were higher. All I am suggesting is that if you are looking for an investment, just make sure it meets future requirements for value based on authenticity.

Yes, I think we're all looking forward to this series on value, and hoping that it becomes a regular feature.

While I receive Sports Car Market just for that purpose, it doesn't necessarily cover every Healey brought to auction, just the ones that make the best copy material. It'll be nice to have someone track the trends for one (1) specific marque.

I had intended to send Bill an E-mail of encouragement after reading the article, but didn't get right down to do it when it was at the forefront of my mind, and I was quickly distacted by the holidays. Since it's now out in the open, I just chimed along with the group. Good job Bill!
 
Totally agree with everyone about the new series of articles about Healey auction values. Love to watch the BJ auctions on TV and the recaps in SCM, but those prices sometimes do not seem to represent real world cars, just who has the most money to spend that particular day and looks at the auction like a competition. As to the BN7 value in this thread, price seems high to me for a car with questions and that needs work.
