How does the metal fuel filler tube go down into the boot/trunk fit? Does its top rim fit over the rubber body entry ring seal or come up from underneath?

Install the grommet in the body , apply some dish soap to the tube and slide it in from the top to meet up with the coupling rubber to connect to the tank .

This is what I thought should happen but it seems to be so much more visible below the cap itself. The cap is an old BMC mini type cap with appropriate size bayonet entry and clip assemblybut I feel the depth of the chrome cap itself needs to come down to smother over the grommet area a little more. Otherwise as I say the neck of the tube shows quite significantly.
When I return home tomorrow I hope to take and send you a picture CH4 though as I say I do believe you are right in putting the tubing from the outside.

Here we are.....as I have said, I don't like the way it protrudes above the body. But there is no way the tube comes from underneath. It has to sit on top.

Regards to all for comments. I shall live with this..

Yep that’s normal . It is a bit “bump on a log” ish , the Aston style caps do look sleeker and less like an afterthought than the stock look .

Consider painting that visible portion of the fuel tube satin / semi-gloss black and it'll look less, well, obtrusive. Reason why I switched to a mini Aston fuel cap like Healey Nut. The original fuel tube / cap assembly is in parts storage should I feel the need to convert back.

It's interesting that the tube is stainless steel. Probably live with it.....gives it some provenance I s'pose.
I've kept a slightly rust marked rear bumper as well! After 41 years DIY restoration I'm happy it's on the road. (The Saga is part of my profile matters if you choose to read it sometime)
