BJ8 dipstick

Wondering if someone(s) with a BJ8 or same motor, could do me a favour and run a tape measure over the length of their oil dipstick from the bottom of the stick to the disc that sits on the top of the tube, and also the length of the tube from the point it enters the block to the top?

Suspecting that mine is not correct - which seems to be causing some issues of over filling...

Thanks
Simon

Thanks Shorn.

Just compared that to mine and the dipstick is the same; 17 1/4" to the metal disc, but my dipstick tubing from the block to the top is 4 3/8" !!

Anyone else share one of these measurements?

Thanks
Simon

Certainly it seems that my dipstick length is as standard - we had some doubt as the the distance piece/washer had been brazed on, so we thought it might have been replaced in the wrong spot - but the length of the tube (or the position it has been secured into the block) will affect the measurement. Apparently there is a little ledge it sits against?

When measuring the dipstick, take into account the round rubber seal.
I'll attach some photos showing my rubber seal.

Confirmed that my tube from engine to top is also 4 3/8. Previous measurement was for the top part of dipstick.

Thanks mate. Looks like mine is pretty much where it should be then...

Anyone know for sure how much oil 1/8" on the dipstick equates to, and does it change as you go from the bottom of the stick to the top of the Max mark?

I just assume that the distance between the low and full or max marks on the dipstick represents approx. one quart or oil.

The Bently Manual says the sump holds 12.3 US pints, 2 pints/quart = 6.15 quarts. This is sump only, not including filter. I would do an oil change and add just over 6 quarts and see where that shows on the dipstick. That should tell you if your dip stick is 'calibrated' right.

WTF? There's a rubber seal on the dipstick? Why am I always the last to know?

Hi red57

Yes I think you're right. Thats the next move.

Also about to fit a telescopic rear shock kit. While its on the hoist we'll have a look to see why it is now handling so poorly. Its never been great, but after a two week driving holiday at the Targa Tasmania in the Porsche 356, i got a real shock when i hopped back into the BJ8. I'm kinda hoping there is something broken - surely its not that bad compared to the 356?!

I didn't know either -- have to fabricate one from a set of faucet seals I have.

Cos you either do not have a BMC parts manual, or did not look it up.

Mind you, I have one, a parts manual that is, but did not realize it either!
