I have very quickly read through these post and I am no expert on Marelli ignition (Lucas OPUS only!), but symptoms you describe seem to match the problems with the Marelli distributor cap/rotor that others have had. I apologise if this has been covered, but I saw no reference in the quick look I had to either of these parts.
I suggest you remove the cap and rotor and inspect them very, very carefully for arcing (especially if not genuine Marelli parts). Also check the condition of the central carbon brush. It may just be coincidental that it has started to occur at the same time as removing the engine.
