MGB 1973 MGB help Please

Don't move the door hinges if they're still in good shape...& don't use a screwdriver on those 6 screws in the door that take the doors off the hinges....use a posi - #3, I think.

Ok thanks for that info guys. And tony what is a posi -#3

It's a different type of screwdriver. I think they're called Pozidrive, and are trademarked. BL might have used them cause they were easier to use than ordinary screwdrivers (less likely to round out the screwhead) or to keep mere mortals like us from messing with stuff we couldn't possibly understand.

It is really different from a Philips, look at one with a glass. You can see it is cut different and a Philips will strip one out in a hurry. That said it is not a bad thing.

There ya go - more info than you can get anywhere else...go up to the vendor links & click on British Tool's ad - they have them at a good price.

You can get pozidrive bits at Advance Auto Parts or PepBoys if you look carefully. If in a set, they'll be marked PZ1, PZ2, and PZ3. I saw a screwdriver with pozidrive bits for $6.99 at PepBoys recently, and Advance has a box of bits that includes pozidrive bits for $3. Not the greatest quality, I'm sure, but they work on my car, and if I bugger one up I just toss it and get another.

I've never been able to find any Craftsman bits. Snap-On may make them.

Here's a link about pozidrive screws:

Have fun!

Look for the supporting vendors page, link at the top.

HUH! Its not there!

thats what i was thinking i looked at the page for 20 min.

Ok another stupid question should i get a mgb overdrive tranny or should i get the 5 speed from moss

You should get it running, enjoy it for a bit, solve all the problems, learn about it & what makes it better, & then do what your research says....I've driven B's for years without either - to no detriment.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif For the most of the fun driving - whatever came on the car from the factory will be the most fun... And I won't be the second you change the transmission.... It would be like puting an Automatic and a 383 chevy stroker into the 53 Caddy - no longer the car it was - ever. Drive some history, keep your MG stock!!!!!!

Trust me it's still fun that way, maybe moreso~! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

mmmm... I have to agree for the most part. Mainly in the areas of getting things squared away before you turn to modifications.

As for the OD or 5-Speed conversion question though, I'd have to say go with what ever is easier for you to obtain. An OD from a MGB parts car may keep the car closer to stock or at least in OEM trim, but it may be a bit more difficult to find. On the other hand the Moss Motors 5-speed conversion is a bit pricey, and you might be able to get 2 MGB OD transmissions for the price of Moss's 5-Speed kit. Between the two routes, I have to say go with what your wallet will support.

As an aside, Moss Motors isn't the only company that sells 5-speed conversion kits for MGBs. I know of at least two other kits that can be found on the net. One of them uses a 5-speed from a Nissan 280z (I think), the other uses a 5-speed from a Ford Sierra(?).

I think the Moss unit is exactly the same as one of the two common 5-speed conversion kits. As it is, though, I'd trust the Moss unit well before the company that sold it before (or maybe stil does). There is a little something good to be said for some good old american quality and horse-trading. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

But, I'd stick with the factory 4 speed - with or wothout Overdrive... Just because that's what you bought, that's the way it rolled off the dealer's lot, and that's the way you bought it. Maybe I'm a little too "put it back to factory specs"..... But I'm hoping everyone else modifies theirs.... That way mine becomes somewhat more rare. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a stock 4 speed on my 76 Midget. This is the one part that has not given me any problems. Not to mention, I have a blast with it. Unless you're planning to race or do some serious road rallys, stock is good.

sooooooo... yer not gonna do the v8 swap you hinted at in the RB B thread then? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

I like to stir the manure sometimes - but who knows /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif - hehehehehehe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

well i was just thinking what i should do because i have to rebuild the tranny i have. or i was looking at the other 2 ideas because it would almost cost the same amount of $$$.
