Spitfire 1965 Spitfire Mk2 - Colorado

JRC,

Welcome! I'll admit to being partial to early Spitfires as well even though we no longer own one. My wife acquired a 1968 Spitfire MkIII while we were in our youth which we only recently sold (although it had been off the road for a lot of years!).

I've got a lot of Spitfire parts that I need to eventually find homes for when I can pull them out of storage. I can keep an eye out for a grab handle for you. What kind of condition are you looking for?

Thanks for the help. Any condition above "in pieces" should work. I am quite handy at refurbishing.

I guess I need to get around to posting my rollbar in the classifieds. I'm still trying to navigate the site. I know I posted pics somewhere... LOL

Chaulk me up as another early Spit guy here. '65 is the absolute best year (for the simple reason that I've got a '65 also :thumbsup:smile:.

I'd join in on the razzing the TR guys, but I'm terrified my TR would find out somehow...

I wish I had a garage big enough for more than one! But I guess knowing that our family has the '59 TR3 in another garage, is good enough. I need to get ol' grandpa out on a drive. :laugh:

BTW... I'll let you old Spit owners know if I can hook up an inexpensive bumper bar. I thought I had, but I opened a box to find an A-H bar. :cryin:

The old gas!!! without the new "super" additive in it, you should be able to take it to Christie's in New York, and auction it off.

I have a 64 Spitfire that is a driver again(finally). I've added a few upgrades from a Mk IV, all of which can be undone. I bought this car in a weak moment thinking I could fix it up quickly and cheaply and drive it until I could find another TR3 to replace the one I had sold. There is nothing cheap about this car. And the TR3 never came my way and at their prices today never will. I also have an 80 Spitfire that was given to me by a fellow poster here. Its getting closer to running after an engine rebuild. Still trying to get all the doodads for a twin carb conversion.
 
You used the word "quickly"! I knew what I was in for, even before my father-in-law's TR3.

What color is the '64 Spit? Any pics?

Anyone have the source for new mirrors? Mine don't seem to be what I have seen in VicBrit. The holes are 4 inches apart.

Don't know what those are. I say dump them and fill in the holes. They aren't supposed to be there anyway.

Andy my have a good idea were. Try Victoria they have different mirrors with different size bases.

If you really want to do the spitfire stuff right you need to have the following.

Herald mk1 which led to the spitfire which led to the gt6. So you need to get all 3 in your collection.


As for having only a 2 stall garage. It is summer now. Park the wifes car in the street along with yours. The garage now is taken over by the cars and motorcycles. Being we have 7 cars around here and a motorcycle in a 2 stall you have to get creative.

Let's see, 3.5 Heralds, 2 Spitfires... Hmmm, I'll trade you a super rare 948 Herald convertible for a GT6... :yesnod:

Nothing brilliant comes to mind, other than scouring a: auto parts stores and b: flea markets (especially if you want something "period" that will match the hole spacing).

Thing is, mirrors were not installed by the factory back then, in part because they generally were not required, and in part because they'd likely have gotten lost or broken during shipping. Yes, they could have been packed inside the car as some other external bits were, but they weren't because most states didn't require them, and dealers and regional distributors probably could get better deals in the US.

Triumph did, in fact, offer "approved" accessories such as the mirror below:

(Some even had a Triumph "shield" embossed on them.)

The same mirror was offered as well by various other aftermarket suppliers, such as Foreign Car Accessories of NY.

<span style="color: #FF0000"><span style="font-weight: bold">UPDATE: I meant to mention that the mounting hole spacing on the above mirrors is just shy of 2.5".</span></span>

Likely, though, a lot of Triumphs that did end up with door mirrors had ones like your car: generic aftermarket American car-style mirrors. The bullet-style mirrors didn't generally get installed on Triumphs until the very late 1960s (and even they were, I think, sourced in the US).

Now this is some great info! I was just going to get some mirrors from one of the vendors, and fix the holes on the doors. As I am in no hurry, I might get lucky.

I did check VicBrit, which led me to post this. None of their fitaments matched. Looks like I have Jeremy's!
