T-Series 1953 MG TD Reassembly - CONTINUOUSLY UPDATED

Well, so far, the only place I've nicked my paint was attaching the top 4 bolts of the gas tank - that sucker's a bear!

Those 3 are nice - glad to see I'm not the only one who knows how the licesne plate apparatus really goes!

That's another little piece I am missing - the small vertical bracket that holds the plate light on. Is your's installed Tony? If not can you snap a close up of it.

I'll snap one today...& if we're talking about the same thing, I have an extra.

My car came with California Black plates mounted on each bumper. Somewhere along the line, the original bracketting was scrapped along with the Light. I am still waiting to get the PO to look for all the stuff which might still be in the Garage of his mother (who was the Original PO). She is very old and it's tough for him to get in the garage at this point. I am still in contact with him even though I purchased the car 7 years ago.

So far I have collected the Curved tube & the "T" shaped bracket but the small vertical bracket and the light are still missing. I recently got the light but the chrome cover & guts are toast. The glass is good so I am also still looking for an original light. They come up from time to time on ebay for a few bucks I just forget to bid on them.

Knox is great, would not think of any place else. Service is out of this world and quality of product is perfect and I did not have it done to show quality even.

vping - its already on the car, but here's a photo:

As you can see, its 2 individual pieces & I have an extra pair of them....I had originally painted it body color because I found some old factory photos of them painted that way...however, zahnej emailed me & suggested it might look better painted black (he was right!)...after some more researching, I found that the majority of them left the factory painted black - a few left body color but that was the minority.

Looks to me that the chrome cover and light assy are Bugeye parts as well. Look in the Moss Spridget catalog. I'd bet on it.

Well darn Tony, is that all you did today? How do you stand it.

Jack, I'm burned out!

Spent 3 hours this morning adjusting the latch/lock assembly on the passenger door trying to get the door to sit flush along the entire front edge (I've taken that thing apart so many times, I can do it with my eyes closed!). Then I got the all the wheels' paint touched up & the spare wheel painted/clearcoated after the new tires were mounted. Rickey had to make a delivery so he closed early....its just as well since I had to go do a quote on parts for an insurance job (MGB wiring harness replacement) & get them ordered...plus, I'm now rummaging through all my engines trying to find a buildable 18G (3-main) for a customer!

Leaving Sunday for 2 weeks in upstate New York...don't worry though, parts business will go on as usual with no delays...& I really need that time away from this TD!

....& I have a question: how does the back edge of the rear side curtain attach to the car? I can't figure it out. I know how the front edge of the rear side curtain attaches but can't put the bracket on until I figure out how the back of the side curtain attaches.

And now you know why it is not good to have your restoration in your garage. The hours and hours just seem to add up without end.

Tis a good thing that your project is 15 miles away so you have a bit of time for other things.

How's this?

vping...there's 1 photo missing that I need to see....the rear bracket, please, from the inside...somehow it slips down behind the rear panel into a slot in the body tub, I know that....however, I'm guessing there's a piece of metal that goes across that slot (probably behind the panel)that's not on my tub & that I've got to identify in the few left-over pieces in my boxes!

Oh, good to see your photos to identify the color of the top bows & side curtains...knew ithey were a beigey color but wasn't cetain of the hue.

Tony,

I sent 2 pictures of the bracket that holds the rear side curtain "tang" to your web site. Hope it helps!!. Someone needs to tell me how to put pictures in a post.

Got the photos...thanks - just what I needed....now, I've gotta go find the little "tangs"!

Okay, the only way I know to post photos here is to first put them somewhere on the web (I use my web site)...once I have a place where they're residing, I can go to that place & copy the url/properties of the photo....then, using a
behind the url, I post them here.

Basil one time taught me another way but I've forgotten it.

The color of those curtain frames looks too light, probably from the camera flash. It should be a medium tan, same as other T-Series cars. Search out photos of TC, TD and TF on the web for examples or I can send you shots of my restored frames tomorrow.

Steve - I had planned on painting them a color that's almost biscuit based on what my side curtain framess looked like when I took the curtains off. So many lttle details....if you have the paint code, lemme know.

Tony,

There is a site out there that has some interesting TD info - site is below

https://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/index.html

Click on details - finishes. He lists some paint codes. Cannot vouch for the accuracy of this "expert"

The sample he shows is not even close but it may be the way the computer renders it. I have found his colors to be pretty close to what other "experts" say they should be.

Thanks, I use his info all the time - some is good, some questionable...that's where I got the color i was going to use on my frames.

Probably lighter because of camera flash. These are the original frames & never been painted.

Tony, Do you need a photo still?. The inside of that is coverd by fabric.

Try photobucket.com. It's fast easy & free. I have hundreds of pics there and it is what I use to do all of my posting.
