1098 exhaust options

I stopped by the local Harley Dealer this mporning. Walked into the Service Shop told the guy I was looking for a stock Harley Muffler for the Sprite and the application. He walked into the back and came back with a used one a bit scratched up but perfectly fine for Bugsy. You'll never see the scratches under the car. Will need to do a little fabrication but the Big U Bolt that is around the glasspack look like it will fit just fine. Since present exhaust tip sits at least 6-8" behind the lower body panel I may not even have to fiddle with additional piece of short pipe. I'm a happy camper. My cost - FREE. Yes anoher victory for the "We Tight Club."

Excellent, will look forward to results.

Great score! please post pics - not just "after" But "during" - ie. the mods you need to make.

Tried to start mounting muffler I scored today only to discover it had hjad its guts removed already. I'm guessing if I want to quiet down Bugsy I should not be able to see clear through the muffler. So I'll go back early next week and see if I can make a deal on one with baffles still in place. I already see how to make it louder with a screwdriver.

This will work really slick. I;'ll take some pics tomorrow and post.

Of course you can see through it it's a straight through mufler as is the orginal

 Alright!!! Another Harley-mufflered Spridget (mine was free too, in fact I got two, so I have a spare!)...you're gonna like the way it sounds!! Didn't the muffler you got from Harley have that nice welded-on hanger-bracket (they actually come with a couple of different variations of bracket depending on the model application)? Mine did and it worked great...really quite a simple switch-over!

Mike,

Here's the freebie I got. If I have time today it may go on Bugsy. Jack the baffles were drilled out on the inside so you can see straight through it. Since my goal is to quiet down Bugsy just a little so I can start him up on a weekend morning and not wake up the better half when I go for coffee I'll need to go back and find one with baffles still intact.

Other option is a resonator and Dual tip pipe combo of AutoZone and Advance Auto Parts. You can see the option by looking at both Web Sites. That's a $40-$60 option by the time you are done.

Crap, found time to pull the old muffler off and my exhaust pipe is 1 1/2" not 1 3/4" will need soem sort of adapter to go from 1 1/2" to 1 3/4". This do do some more engineering.

Should be able to get a 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" reducer at most any parts store.

As Ray says, those adapters are readily available at your local parts store with many options to choose from, both OD and ID measurements!! That looks just like the one on my car (my "spare has a different mount. Just a tab welded on with a bolt hole on the tab!) That mounting bracket on that one is cool. What I did was enlarge the slot on one end so that I could insert a bolt-head and then slide it up the slot to where I wanted, ran the bolt through the hanger, used a body-washer and then double-nutted it!(I used a strap-hanger).
(PS mine came without baffles!)

I just got back from an AWESOME Sunday afternoon cruise on a perfect day. Took my 14 year old daughter (who got her learner's permit Friday). MG ran fine, exhaust is fine other than the leak, it's pretty loud but I think I live with it once the leak is fixed. It actually came apart in a parking lot right by home (as my daughter was trying a stick for the first time), downpipe off the header I'm pretty sure. Weird, that's the joint I suspected from the beginning and I had it cranked down pretty tight with a clamp. It was VERY loud the half block ride home, glad it didn't let go further away!

I am not so sure there are bafels in those muflers. think the exhaust passes straight through and through a pipe with holes in it and packing behind them.

Bafeled muflers are for big old fat cars.

Hey was able to get the muffler mounted with a few adapter pipes. Cost me $9.00 with 2 clamps at AutoZone yesterday. Cranked it up and it is a little quieter than the glasspack I had on there. Did not get a chance to drive and wind it out and as soon as I started up the car the XWQE!E~W Choke Handle came off in my hand. Cheap Chinese....., oops sounding like Frank C. all of a sudden. Hey I think it looks good and sounds halfway decent. So after I get a new choke cable installed, last time 3-4 hours worth of work after radio console deinstalled and moved, find a local MOWOG to get his hands in there behind the dash, break something else I'll need to fix, swear a lot at Bugsy and get it all back together. A PITA that I'll now be doing for the 2nd time in 2 months.

Anyway here's how Bugsy looks from behind Post Harley Muffler Install:

Looks preaty darn good from here.

Jack,

And I should have researched your method for reattaching the choke cable handle yesterday before I pulled out the cable in frustration. @

That looks good. I found my Harley mufflers last night when I was trying to find some Sprite parts buried in my garage. I was thinking a Y pipe and a matched pair might look interesting. I'll have to investigate the feasibility.

Ya gotta love the price though. I should start hoarding the ones from the local shop. The quality of the Harley mufflers is really good too.

Problem is this one has the baffles drilled out. It really is a straight pipe at this point. About same volume as the old glasspack that was all burned out. Better half was standing behind the car when I started up yesterday. And of course she told me it was still too loud.

I needed 2 couplers from Autoone to get it to match up. Could not find a 1 1/2" ID to 1 3/4". Took muffler with me, sat on the floor and played musical couplers until I got one that matched.

It will be LOUD!!!
