Haha, my first '66 Sprite had its original muffler (I assume, it was the pinched corner style one like in Moss' catalog) and it was very loud. It'd also backfire on deceleration.
My current Sprite has a muffler that looks like the other Moss replacement part for the newer cars. It is also straight though, but the baffles are not saturated with gunk, so it is loud but tame. Sounds about the same as your typical 16 year old kid driving around a Honda civic with one of those chrome potato cannons on it.
My aftermarket exhaust that came with the car (new old stock) is also straight through. I don't think these cars ever really dealt with baffled exhausts, like we're used to on everything else.
