Penny's bodywork begins

I stopped by the bodyshop on my lunch break today and snapped a few more pictures. They've got the right rear quarter mostly done now -- panels are welded in but not finished off yet. I also took a few minutes to go over the rest of the tub, and I didn't see anything else that we missed when we did our inspection. The bonnet is pretty much done as well. I'm reasonably hopeful that I'll have Penny back before summer hits. I can't wait.

On another note, the shop seems to have a good sense of humor. They found a new motive source for Penny (see the last picture in this post). :grin:

At first I thought that last picture was fowl but to be honest it quacked me up! :D What was the bill for that?? <<quickly ducks!>>

I'm going to get a few more pics today when I go down and visit the shop (these pics came from them). This area had been badly patched on Penny before (new metal just slapped on top of the old, rusty metal) so it's nice to be fixing it correctly.[/QUOTE]

Very much like that!

Both old panels were still in place (and quite rotten), they just slapped new ones over the top and away you go. Luckily the rest of the work that was done back then was much better and hasn't needed to be redone.
 
Drew, I can completely comprehend your magnitude of expense. I was very fortunate to have the time and tools to accomplish my body work and final prep. However I didn’t have the type of paint booth to apply paint and clear coat so, I contracted that part and use the savings in the quality of paint and materials that I wanted to use. $$$$.

Great that you could do the bodywork yourself -- that's a big money saver.

If this car wasn't so special to me there'd be no way I'd be undertaking this. Makes no financial sense whatsoever, but that wasn't a consideration for me. Do it once, do it right. Though it will still hurt when I pay the final bill for all this body and paint work. :grin:
 
Small up-date

Stopped by the shop yesterday. They've got the bonnet all ready to go other than the beading -- they're in the progress of getting that all fitted. The tub is almost done, both quarter panels are welded in but the RH side still needs some finishing work. Going slowly, but it is going.

They were also doing some extensive panel replacement on a newer Maserati in the shop. Impressive work, very complicated panels.

This was sitting outside the shop when I got there. Was wondering if they were offering an upgrade. :grin:

I am impressed. Thankfully my tub was primo. One A pillar and one rear fender edge was all the rot
we could find. No evidence of prior repairs either. Holes in doors and fenders from mirrors were touchy
repair as were the re-enforcement of bonnet fender edges to stop some early signs of cracking.
it still took months and $$$$$. I don't envy your wallet.
I think you will not regret the "do it right the first time approach".

ps: I'd ask if the loaner outside was available. ;-)
 
I feel the pain of the cost. The quality of the customers auto's makes me think these guys probably aren't cheap! The work looks good though!

Upgrade? I'm sure the Ferrari owner would probably want your Bugeye once it's done. :smile-new:

Keep plugging away! I'm sure the end result will justify the time involved in the process (and the expense).

Sometimes I think that Penny is the luckiest car in the world to have found me. Getting the treatment usually left for vintage Ferraris or Jaguars, though at a (slightly) lower cost. :grin:

I like Gundy's idea of the Ferrari as a loaner, though I'm likely better off with my Jeep. Certainly my driver's license is safer.

Definitely not cheap, but the work is high quality which is what was important to me. I'm only doing this once, so I'm okay with the extra cost to have it done well.

Not 100% sure, but some sort of glue or panel adhesive is likely. It's just decorative at this point, so that would be fine.
 
Been a while, but we're making a bit of progress. The body shell is pretty much done, just needs a few finishing touches. The bonnet still needs the reinforcing rods welded around the wheel arches, then it'll be ready as well. The shop was finishing up a Ferrari 328 repaint job, then mine should be next for the full court press. Current schedule should have it back in August.

My new loaner :grin:

I still have pretty much *everything* else to do, and the work I'm doing on the Morris right now is pushing things back a ways.
