TR4/4A Transmission Removal - Engine Support

Hi All,

The plan is to pull the transmission next weekend., Interior is stripped and everything is ready to go - next step is to remove the (16) nut/bolts in the bell housing. But, before I do, my question has to do with supporting the engine. I plan on using a large scissors jack with 2x4s under the sump - see photos. I have it positioned just before the oil drain plug. The reason I plan to support from here is b/c the sump has a raised profile for the drain plug. Plus, if I place it too far back it may impede access to the lower bell housing bolts. I plan to insert a folded towel where the 2x4 contacts the sump for added cushion and protection.

Is supporting the engine this way a good idea? Bad idea? Other solutions? Does this risk damaging the sump? I hope not as I just removed, stripped, straightened and epoxy-painted the sump last summer.

Thanks
Bob

Your plan is identical to what I have done on my several tranny removals.

Great to hear. Thanks gents. Unless anyone else begs to differ I will be proceeding this way on Saturday. Then dropping gearbox off with Quantum Mechanics and hope to have it back in the car by Halloween.

Make sure you get the car high enough so the tail shaft has room to clear the floor as the trany slides back and out. In the past, I have needed to unhook the exhaust before to drop the engine down more to get the correct angle for the trans to slide out, but not sure on a tr4. You are looking good you got it

For the install it' a good idea to make a couple of headless pilot bolts to fit in the engine, at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock, to guide the gearbox bell housing into place. Cut a slot into the headless end so as to turn the bolts with a flat head screwdriver. It makes it a lot easier to slide the gearbox into the correct position. It's often a struggle to get it at just the right angle otherwise.

Thanks all for the good advice. How far should I expect to move the gearbox back for the input shaft to clear the clutch?

Karls59TR, great idea. Will get a few hex bolts and hacksaw the heads off.
