Can you send some of that over here, I am trying to get psyched for an engine rebuild on my Elan, but it is hard to get excited about writing a big check /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

150+hp is pretty exciting though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

At least Bean is within arm's reach for you. I gotta wait a week for stuff. What're your plans for doin' your engine?

...all I can do right now is fondle my 125E rods and reminisce. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Well, Bean is still pretty far away and it takes a few days to get the parts ( I restored the car when I lived in Massachusetts though)

The valve guides were worn and it was smoking a lot on start up, so upon deciding to fix that, I figured since we have it apart, might was well do the "big Valve" modification and cams too. Then might as well take the bottom end apart and make sure everything is in good order and maybe go to a cartridge water pump, and might as well balance the con rods and while we're at it should take the transmission out and replace the seals and balance the prop shaft

Now it has turned into big money and 3 months /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Project starts on Saturday.

The worst part is that I only planned on doing the suspension this year (which cost more than planned) so I am WAY over budget

But the way I am rationalizing it is that I better do it before the wife makes me have a kid next year /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good luck! That was my plan too, but the baby is 3 weeks away and still the Lotus waits to be finished...

I have two fuel pumps that don't work, so I'm waiting on an electric pump I ordered and then should be able to make music since ignition, timing etc. etc. has already been checked.

The interior however...

That's why I am paying someone to do it, because if I did it, it would take years to complete /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Car should be quite quick when it is done

Next thing is a fresh paint job, but it can wait a couple of years I hope

Did you have a Manx or did you know Bruce?

Unfortunatly,I didn't ever know Mr.Meyers,
but we did have a local dealer (for a short time),
& i did have one of the Cox Manxs.
I'm very glad to hear that he's still around.
The Meyers Manx was the BEST styled dune buggy of all
time!

Bruce is an interesting character, we spent a couple of days with him for the story, been through a lot in his life.
I definitely like the styling of the original one the best. His new one is pretty quick though, it has a WRX motor powering it.

I think I really need to get DrEntropy to send some of that excitement over now, the plans for getting the car to the shop to remove the engine on Sat. got all fouled up and now it will have to wait until I return from Japan, which set the project back three weeks- an eternity!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Doc, are you doing a full restoration of the car? Is it the S3?

Yup, no choice: Diff torque rod stress has finally cracked the lower frame member, the engine/box unit is now sitting out of the car, can't afford a Spider frame so... "Cover me! I'm goin' IN!"

...last time I did this to this car I was MUCH younger. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

At least you're dealing with parts that are light. I used to wonder how anyone could get anything done on the 55 Packard I had, because everything on that car weighed a minimum of 100 pounds (or was shaped so funny that you couldn't get your arms around it.)

Of course, everything on the Elan is cramped and tightly packaged, so getting the measurements correct is so essential. But you can do it...you know how, so just plan on taking a little more time this go-around.

I'd rather have experience than youth when dealing with cars.

I tell anyone/everyone: "If the discrete bits on your car outweigh me, I can't work on it!"

We seem to have similar philosophies, just different ways of expressing them!

I hung a HUGE "LOTUS" banner up today as my desktop wallpaper. I got pictures sent to me of my car when it was the property of the original owner in the UK: fully assembled and at a show!

Actually, it had FOUR WHEEL torsion bar suspension -- the first of its kind. It was always a problem, because even the Packard specialists never had enough torsion bar retaining tools to work on it.

It also had the auto load levelling system.

I've seen a few of 'em. All I saw had the load leveling rigging disabled. No-one wanted to PAY what it would take to make 'em work. A shame, really.

Interesting. Street legal? Doubtful. I'm not sure about Florida but I think every state has a minimum headlight height. The lowest that I recall seeing was 22". Colorado has a 24" minimum (Technically my TR6 is too low /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

Notice they didn't show any pictures with an actual license plate or a registration. I realize both could be faked but come on. If your going to try and sell it...
