windshield wiper tech on 74 XJ6L

The wipers stopped working the other day. I disconnected the wiper motor from the windsheild wiper cable, and the motor still works. I tried pulling and pushing the cable myself and the cable seems on the stiff side, but I'm only guessing because I have nothing to compare it to. Is it possible that something is keeping the wipers from moving freely, or is it more likely the motor doesn't have the torque it did when new?

It could well be that the wiper motor has had its day, but it's not the only possibility. The cable sounds as if it is the cause. Take off the wiper arms and mark the top of each spindle with correcting fluid or a little white paint, and count the cycles. You should be getting around 40 cycles to the minute on low, 60 on high. If the speeds are correct it could be that the blades are worn and causing drag. If they still don't work right remove the wiper motor and try spinning the wheel boxes. These should move freely. If not, spray a lubricant from above and beneath the box. Next, grease the drive cable and the cogs inside the motor. Replace and re-test. Good luck!
