Texas Cooler

Summer is coming and I've spent the winter insulating and re-carpeting the BJ8. Now I'm planning to replace the original 4-blade radiator fan with a better one. I am seriously thinking about the "Texas Cooler" that is advertised as an alternative to the classic metal 6-blade. My questions to the group are:
1. Does anyone have one and what's their opinion.
2. The ad says it can be painted. What color would make sense?

Thanks as always in advance.

I don't have one, but I think they come in yellow, which would be correct. Make sure you have enough clearance between the pulley and the radiator. I have heard that if you have worn bushings on the transmission mount (that will allow the transmission and motor to move forward when braking hard) the fan will contact the radiator. Not a good thing. But the fan really works well.

I got one last year. They come unpainted. I used Catapillar yellow which is sort of a dirty yellow. I will sell you mine already painted for half of new.

Johnny, thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to check.

Hangtown Healey, you may have a deal but I'm curious as to why you never installed it! You can contact me at fcustis@earthlink.net

I've been running with a Texas Kooler for three years. It seems to work fine. However, I never had a serious overheating issue, so my fan is there as a kind of insurance. It came in a natural yellow cream color. I didn't paint mine but I've been told that all you need do is lightly scuff them and they take paint just fine. Proper color would be brite or school bus yellow.

No amount of hose replacements, radiator repair, thermostat replacement or other measures would stop my '59 BT-7 from overheating. The Texas Kooler worked! AL Bradley

I read somewhere where "school bus yellow" was the correct color for the 3000 and red was correct for the 100 and 100-6. Don't know exactly what shade of red. I just painted and installed one on my BJ7.

Frank,

I had mine installed last year (when Europe was on the brink of overheating). I am really statisfied the way it works.
I mean it must be good having it send all the way to Europe.

I used to experience the typical run temps approaching 205-215F in Dallas traffic during the summer. After in installing the Tx Kooler, I now do not experience anything above 190-195F, it works well and as advertised. I did not have to remove the radiator, just loosened the bolts, tilted forward and replaced the existing fan (keep a box of bandaids handy). I am awaiting summertime testing of my cockpit insulation project completed this winter, but I have had to use the heater this winter, something I previously never needed to turn on.

As usual, thanks to all for the information and advise. For those who have installed the fan, has anyone notice any excessive noise with it? I heard that this may be a problem.

Larry, I insulated my cockpit too and am hopinf that with this modification and the new fan I'll be able to drive around without feeling like I'm in a sauna!!
