anyone know of a source for functional rollhoops, instead of a roll bar, for a TR6? i saw a Spitfire in the member gallery awhile back with hoops that looked great but can't find it again.

i like the look but really would want them to be funtctional as well.

A roll hoop could be made functional, but by the time you have added the bracing required to make it functional it is not so much a roll hoop, but a smaller roll bar.

Modern roll hoops designed and installed on modern cars work only because the windshield surround is reinforced and part of the system. The angle created between the vehicle nose, windshield, and hoops is enough to keep your noggin out of the dirt (to a point).
In a car not designed for them they would need to be as high as a conventional add on roll bar and braced in a similar manner.
Would look like two mountains behind your head.

Hi guys - so I had a post going here about a shelf mounted roll bar and I did confirm (with everyone's help here) that they are dangerous without being heavily reinforced with steel plates below.

Not knocking the hoops because I haven't seen the design or additional plating they come with, but wouldn't they have the same issue as the shelf mounted roll bar?

Francois's items look really nice, some good stuff there, but wouldn't the hoops be dangerous if the car actually did flip?

The hoops come with a disclaimer that they are decorative. The backing plates are the same size as the mounting plates on the bar and same thickness, heavy. I do worry about safety somewhat but if it worried me a lot I wouldn't even climb in a TR6 and drive it on the road much less my MGA which has wooden floors no seat belts and a steel dash. I feel these cars are one step safer than a motorcycle at least in my hands, a motorcycle is probably safer in the hands of an experienced rider. So I guess it is what is.

Here are pictures of the backing plates.

Hi Safari - I understand your point. I guess I just kind of had an issue with a "decorative" safety device that would more likely than not get you hurt even worse if you ever needed it.

I guess if you welded the plates to the floor and used large/strong washers you might be OK.

Sorry if I'm being fussy. They do look great.

I don't think you are fussy, and I understand your point. My view is that just driving a car can get you hurt. I would not take the car on the track and race it seriously believing I was afforded extra protection from a bolt on roll bar. We all use our cars differently and see them differently. Many want performance at all cost, some want originality some us like to add decorations. I don't believe the roll bar is huge safety problem, it could cause me injury just as easily as it may prevent some, who knows if the car is going to flip or be hit in the side, no one knows what is going to happen in a collision. Everyone should enjoy there cars and know the the limits of the car and driver. Please don't take my post as offensive or argumentative it is not meant to be so and I am just sharing my thoughts not trying to convert anyone to my views.

I gave up my motorcycle (for the wife) so I figure driving my TR3 is a great deal safer.
If you like the way it looks put it on.

Absolutely! No offense taken in any way, shape or form. Love the exchange of ideas, and I see your point.

I've too have been finding myself riding the motorcycle less and less these days, something about two young kids...
