I started the engine rebuild and got the head off and out to be redone with the rocker shaft sitting on the work bench. I need some tips and tricks on how to clean it up and make sure that it is in good working order for when the engine is finished.

My advice: Send it off to Rocker Arm Specialists and have them recondition it. In spite of their awful web site (which they claim they are trying to improve), they did a great job on my TR3 shaft, and charged only about what the parts would have cost me to do it myself.

But if you want to do it yourself, you need to disassemble the shaft (remove the rockers, springs and pedestals). Look for wear on the tips of the rockers (which should be a smooth curve in one axis, but straight from front to back), on the shaft itself, and where the rockers ride on the shaft. Also check the adjustment nuts, and the tips of the adjusters where they ride on the pushrods. The springs should probably be replaced just because they are old, even if they aren't visibly worn.

I agree with Randall on Rocker Arm Specialists. They will bush and reface the rocker arms to your specifications. I had already purchased a new rocker shaft, but have seen their finished product. Quite good.
Good work for a good price.
