TR2/3/3A Removing Fabric From TR3 Dash Panel

Afternoon:
Brought my dash panel and fabric to an upholstery shop here in small town Central Tennessee. Guy kept putting me off and putting me off. Now its up to me , at least to remove the old vinyl. Anyone have any clue on how to do it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif The original is very well stuck. After I remove it I will clean it up and take it to a "friend of a friend" Who "really does good work". Anyhow any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.
Thanks, Tinkerman

As I recall, mine peeled off - the glue was pretty much a victim of dry rot. Just peel away, and then scrape the residue with a razor blade. It's metal underneath, so you really can't hurt it. Even if you scratch it a bit, it will be covered with new vinyl.

By the way, you can do this yourself - I bought a kit from TRF, and did mine. Came out pretty decently. The compound curves on the bottom, near the center, were the only tricky places, and the trick is notching the vinyl so it will lay flat in those areas.

with vinyl, heat is good for stretching it around corners when you put it on and also helps removing it. Use a heat gun on the metal to help loosen the glue then rip 'er off. Note the relief notches as Mickey mentioned so you can replicate the cuts after you glue the face of the new piece on.

Go slow and all will be well.

Hey, I know for a fact that doing this job is not that difficult, because I did it and used LEATHER instead of vinyl. There are a few bends that are tricky, but I proceeded VERY SLOWLY. If you take your time, this is a very doable project. First I used a contact type spray glue (3M #90 I believe) on the front flat section to hold the basic piece in position on the dash. Then I used a brushable contact glue for doing the wrap around. This way I could work in small sections at a time and not be hurried.

See attachment for the end result.

I just took the cover off my TR-3A 2 weeks ago; most just peeled away but a few sections were still well adhered. I used a hair dryer and putty knife and it too peeled away.

Do you have a picture of the finished car?

Is it as pretty as that dash?

The car is still a work in progress...Hopefully by the end of this upcoming summer it should be done. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
