MGB Removing stuck blade on factory electric cooling fan???

One of my factory cooling fans has the blade mounted backwards. This was a used replacement I got about 13 years ago, and I just recently noticed that it is backwards! The other one is correct. Now I notice it every time I open the bonnet and it bugs me...so I'm gonna have to fix it. Problem is, I can't get the fan off the shaft. There is no set screw installed. I soaked it with PB Blaster for a couple of days. It won't budge.

Anyone have any good ideas to get this thing off without trashing it?

I'm thinking I'm going to have to fabricate some kind of puller...kinda like a steering wheel puller, but with fingers that reach around far enough to grab the metal collar at the shaft. Maybe then I can press it off without damaging it so it can be reinstalled properly...

Would it be easier to just reverse the polarity on the motor?

...take that and the grain o' salt it's offered with. :smirk:

You will more than likely ruin the fan. The metal clip is not very forgiving and is meant as a one time fitting.

Metal clip? We may not be talking about the same fan. Here's a pic of the late MGB fan. It has a metal collar with a set screw that fits over the motor shaft. The shaft has an indentation where the screw meets it. The one I'm trying to remove has the set screw already missing, but the metal collar is stuck to the shaft and doesn't want to slide off.

Ah, different style fan. Would soak if for a few days...problem with the missing set screw letting more moisture in. The shaft on the motor is soft material, so take your time.

I had a bad fan motor (worn bushing), a good friend and long time MG mechanic/expert told me it'll never come off buy a new motor and fan. He even gave me several dead motors with fans stuck on then to experiment with. I tried everything I could think of, nothing worked...after a while I decided to take the advice of the expert ! I bought the new fan along with the motor. :encouragement:
