Refurb transmission VB or have local shop

I need to figure out what the best way to get my 1500 4 spd transmission fixed. I am starting to have trouble with the synchro for 3rd gear and now its beginning to happen in 1st gear as well.

I noted I could purchase a refurbished 1500 4 spd in Victoria British for around $800. But was wondering if anyone has ever had a local transmission shop rebuild theirs for less. Is using a local shop something to avoid? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

I rebuilt mine myself, and it is much easier than you might think.

I can't say a lot for local shops, except from my experience they almost never warrenty a manual transmission. They make the excuse that people cant drive and that manual gearboxes are for racing, therefore people race with them. (At the same time they make racing versions of automatic transmissions for Detroit iron). I have very rarely been satisfied with local shops. I ran several foreign car garages for about 17 years between Massachusetts and Virginia and can guess that I had probably gotten two or three back from the trans shops that didn't need further work. But you might get lucky and find a guy that's good with spitfire boxes.

Or try it yourself. Just a set of synchros, gaskets and some bearings as needed. Then be very careful with disassembly and reassembly.

I have another question. If ones does attempt to rebuild a transmission is there any manuals to recommend? I've got a spare 4spd sitting in the garage so it might be worth taking a look to see if I have the ability and skill to do it. I would need a good manual though and lots of pictures

I might also try "Quantum Mechanics" that some one suggested as I bought by SU carbs from him and he seemed like a real decent guy to do business with.

Thor, they don't get much simpler than the 1500 tranny.
I would recommend the Bentley manual, as it's nearly a direct reprint of the factory book.

I would check with Quantum Mechanics, they are in the NE, I believe Conn. if I'm not mistaken, all they do is British gearboxes and have a great reputation. I bought some SC/CR race boxes from them and they have gave good service.

WOW! As easy as they are to rebuild, why would you spend the $$$'s to ship it back & forth across the country? No special skills necessary for this job - just an understanding of how they work or a good manual.

Some are artists and some are mech-a-nicks like me.

John at Quantum most certainly fits into the artist category, and if you decide to do it yourself, (as I have done) he can provide you with quality parts at a very reasonable price!! He will also take the time to offer advice!!

(PS, Conn is NOT all the way across the country from NY either!!)
