New "hot" street cam for TR2-4A

I've been trying to talk Larry Young (no relation) into making a "hot street" cam for the TR2-4 ever since I started hearing about how well his cams do on the track. He has now agreed that if he gets four firm orders, he will cut a master and make some cams. Check out the testimonials at https://www.tildentechnologies.com/testomonials.html for some idea of how successful his first TR racing cam has been.

There is also a huge amount of information on the web site about cam design, including some new algorithms that Larry has developed and incorporated in computer software. https://www.tildentechnologies.com/Technical/CamPerformance.html

I don't claim to understand all the technical stuff, but with comments like that from "uncle jack" and Tony, I want one! I've already made a commitment to Larry, so we only need 3 more ... if you have any questions or would like to get in line, please contact Larry at cartravel at pobox.com

No financial interest, other than the more people that sign up, the less I'll have to pay

Did Larry sell his racecar? I see it is still on his website. Love the logo on the back, "hang on to 16 as long as you can" - very fitting for the number 16 car, and probably for all TR hobbiests in general!

From the potentially useless trivia department, I knew Larry's non-car work about 25 years ago, when he was in the oil&gas industry. With a PhD and well versed in fluid dynamics & phase behavior, he wrote a reservoir simulator that was 10 times faster than its nearest competitor. Maybe his cam will do the same!

I am definitely interested.

The price will be high, compared to the other 'classic' regrinds available from the usual suspects. Looks like probably in the neighborhood of $400 (on your core), but you really need to talk to Larry for details.

I couldn't get to his web site just now, so we may have swamped the server or exceeded his bandwidth limit ... if you have the same problem, try again in a few days. This offer isn't going away overnight.

But if you read through all the information there, you'll see that Larry started out making cams just for his own TR3 vintage race car. He kind of got cornered into being in the cam business in a very small way, when the other racers started noticing how fast he was. Like some other high quality sources, this is just a cottage industry started by a retired guy who couldn't find the performance parts he wanted anywhere else.

I love guys like this........so many cool parts and upgrades have come out of the cottage industry.

Too bad he doesn't branch out into the TR6..... or are there already too many TR6 cam options?

Randall-

His site seems to be up now. Didn't read 100%, but there is some very interesting cam discussion there. For this 'hot street' cam, do you know what rpm range this will benefit? I'm rarely, if ever above 3500 and I wonder if I'd get much HP increase at that limit.

Bob-

You need to read through his site - his first car, and one he still owns is a TR250. And he's talking about a cam for that.

He is still collecting information on what people are interested in; so no definite numbers yet. But it seems clear to me that if you are shifting at 35 hundred, this cam won't do you much good. He said the race cam that Jack and Tony were using made good power from 40 to 65; so I'm hoping this 'street' cam will work from maybe 32 to maybe 57 or so. If you shift at 35, that's going to drop you back down to around 25, which won't be good at all.

But of course I'm not the expert here, that's at best a semi-educated guess. Larry is the expert.

Sent him an e-mail.
Problem is ,as i see it, is that not every hot steet engine is the same.
Mine is 89mm bore with 7" rods and 10:1 comp. with dual side drafts.
Most will have stock length rods and either 87 or 89mm bore. Not everyone wants dual side drafts, different valves, different springs, offset head, different compression, etc. But, i hope he is willing.
