As I go through our new-to-us '60 bugeye I noted that the ribbed-case 4 speed that came with the car had a 1" clutch slave cylinder. Now that I am working on the master cylinders I note that the bore on both is 7/8". I get the idea that the 1" slave is a replacement for what was originally there - likely 7/8". But, it worked when I drove the car with the 4-speed, and assume it will work with the 5 speed.
Now, for the brakes. The previous owner fitted front disk brakes, and had fitted a Triumph 2/3/4 rear axle with its larger drums. Again, driving it, the 7/8" master cylinder worked, though definitely had to step on dem brakes if you wanted to stop quickly.
I note that both 7/8 and 3/4" bore master cylinders are available. I get the idea that it is common to switch to a 3/4 bore to get better stopping power when switching out the front drum brakes to discs. The question I have is, will going with a 3/4 bore clutch master give enough travel with the 1 inch bore slave cylinder.
I suppose the answer is that if I want to go to 3/4" master cylinders it might be a good idea to go down to a 7/8" clutch slave cylinder. Hmmm. Only $15 from Moss.
Probably too esoteric to answer, but I thought I'd see what you good folks know.
