location of vehicle identification number plates

A couple of weeks ago I bought a second Healey (62 BN7). Earlier today I finally had a chance to go and register it. I live in California and I bought the car in Oregon, and inasmuch the car is subject to a physical inspection. The counter person asked if the car had two separate locations for the VIN.

I am not sure there are two locations, one obvious location is on the Firewall. I also think there is an identification number on the shock plate, but I always thought the number was a body number.

What say you?

Starting in very late BJ7, the chassis number was stamped on the outward face of the shock riser. It continue through the end of BJ8 production.

Concours Guidelines.

Randy
Actually, the Concours Guidelines should say "In theory.....the VIN was stamped..... [typically, the entire VIN was stamped, not just the chassis number].
I've had occasion to inspect a whole bunch of BJ8 shock towers for this number, and in more cases than not, there is no visible/legible number on the shock tower. My BJ8 is chassis 36666, and what I found on the shock tower (only after stripping the paint to bare metal and scrutinizing with a strong light and magnifying glass) was only the bottom curve of each digit. It could have been 00000....
For such a critical number, BMC (or maybe it was Jensen Motors, who built the chassis) was surprisingly casual about how they stamped it.

Some few BJ8s have also been found with the VIN or chassis number stamped into the passenger's floor, just in front of the seat.
I do not know if any of that has any relevance to a BT7.

I registered mine in California and told them that there was only ONE VIN number used by Austin Healey in 1967 year (plus or minus). They don't know anything about these cars. You have to inform them.

Jerry I agree and I only have myself to blame, I tried to get this done at the Auto Club. They have their instructions from the DMV and don't (or won't) have discreation on this matter.

YOHO YOHO it's off to the DMV I go;)

Went to the DMV yesterday and registered the car without a hitch. When the VIN Verification Officer asked me to show her where the 2nd VIN number was I confidently handed her a copy of Moss Motors catalogue, as if it had just jumped off the Vatican's printing press. I directed her attention to an image on a page showing the location of the plate on the firewall with the VIN Number on it. See, I said, the manual only shows one location. She nodded her head as if I had just handed her two stone tablets, completed her report and sent me happily on my way.

Which goes to prove it isn't always what you say, but rather how you say it. In the famous words of the Fonze, " Bull*#%& makes the world go round."

Cheers,

Jeff
