TR4/4A Jaeger Gauge Question

I got my gauges out of the storage to look them over before reinstalling them a little later. I took the bezel off to clean the glass and polish the bezel. There was some residual black substance between the glass and the bezel but not much left so I was wondering if it originally was a gasket or simply a sealant. If it is a gasket does anyone know where to get them? All I was going to do is clean them up a little and reinstall them but is there anything (lube etc) that I should do before putting them on? Bruce

Check with Nisonger. There is a seal that turned to brittle crust betwixt bezel and glass, not sure if it can be sourced from them. Search some British sites like Rimmer Bros. as well. I know I've seen them, just not where.

The gasket between gauge and facia can be made from the square o-rings in oil filter kits ( I made them using MGB cannister filter o-rings) trimmed to appropriate diameter and super-glued the ends to make them.

Nisonger is not in business at this time due to storm damage.

I have emailed Nisonger and will post their response when I get it. Hate to hear about their dilemma. I recall many years ago that they rebuilt the gauges on my MGA. Thanks for the responses. Bruce

I'm going from memory here... I think there is an internal o-ring, between chrome bezel and glass. This I'm pretty sure I ordered from Moss, p/n 280-860 and -870 for large and small gauges. There is a square o-ring between bezel and dashboard, which you can build like Dr. Entropy suggested, although I ordered mine from Autoelectrical LDT in the UK. P/n 010182 for the 4" guages, 010181 for the 2" gauges. I also bought a "sponge cord seal", 3 and 4 mm in diameter (p/n 010186, 010185). This was to replace the o-rings, but I think the o-ring worked well for me - I think the sponge cord seal might have been too large in diameter.

Again, I am going on memory here... I could be overlooking some details.

Your memory is spot on, Mike. The original seals turned first to a gooey slime, then to a crusty black crud. Hard to undo the bezel without softening that crust most of the time.

Mike - Moss 280-860 is not the seal I need. It is the O ring between the bezel and dash whereas I need the internal between the glass and bezel. I emailed Nisonger yesterday morning and no response yet even though they are supposedly still selling parts. Just emailed Redline and West Valley Instruments in Cal as well. Will report when I get responses. Bruce

Understand. Again, I'm going from memory, and I appreciate you verifying!

Let me dig out my gauges tonight and see if I can remember what I used. I do vaguely recall using the Moss o-rings internally... but also recall that not all the o-rings fit well... I may have used the Moss parts for the larger gauges and the sponge cord seal for the others, or vice-versa. Also the Moss o-rings are round, and the o-rings between gauge and dash should be square.

As something I've found for the seal between bezel and glass, a 3/32" o-ring works great. I've cut mine from larger diameter o-rings but a "fit" for the small gauges is the AS568-135 listed on the: www.theoringstore.com site.

And it won't turn to goo in five years. 😉

Nisonger replied to me and said the set for all the gauges will be $21.95 + shipping. I think I could save a few dollars and order from the O ring store listed above but not enough savings for me to maybe not get the right thing so I am going to order from them tomorrow. Redline in CA was given as a source but they said they do not work on Jaeger and recommended MoMa in New Mexico. West Valley Instruments also responded but said they would check and get back to me. Everbody's advice was greatly appreciated. Bruce

Sounds Nisinger is able to help - good news!

I took a look at my gauges last night, but I really can’t remember what I did – other than a square O-ring outside, between gauge and dashboard. I do recall cutting black construction paper circles for one of the gaskets… Unfortunately my memory – and my forgetfulness for good photography during assembly - is getting in the way.

Take pictures!
