Installing visors on a B

Ok here's my next problem. I can't seem to get the visors installed. I can't get the nut started on the thread of the screw. Is there a trick to this, or a special tool?

I'd have to go look at mine, but I'm pretty sure the threaded shaft on the visors just uses a simple nylock nut (kind of necessary because you don't want to torque them down all the way).

I've never had any problem taking them apart or putting them back together. If it's really though maybe the nut you have has the wrong thread, take the whole thing to a nut/bolt supplier and see if they have something that goes on easily.

I had that problem. The threaded shaft on the new ones were shorter than the old. Also the brackets that came with the new ones were angled and the old ones were straight.
So, what I ended up doing was drilling the old ones deeper so the new would fit and that worked great. Be very careful and go slow checking your progress often and go lightly. The drill tries to bite in if it is sharp and take out large amounts of metal. Use a drill bit the size of the large opening and just deepen the large hole.
Tighten the nuts just enough so your visors won't drop in your face if they come loose from the catches.
I had the windscreen off when I did this but you hopfully should be able to do it on the car.

Hi,
Yes the shaft is too short. I believe the bracket is the original. I have a hard top on mine right now, so I'd have to take that off.
Is there anyway to change both visor and bracket and make it go on easy? Or how about does anyone know where to find a place where I can get an old visor rod?

I replaced my visors with that kit way back in 96 or 97. I seem to remember the same problem. I think I ended up grinding some off of the nut. The very first part of the nut didn't have enough thread to grab, so I ground off some of the flat rounded face to the threads were closer.

IIRC, the visor bracket is pop riveted to the screen frame. Yeah, it's removable, but you then have to re-rivet it on. I used a socket wrench to remove them (they're in the way if you are tall, and we never use them anyway), and they came right out.

I installed visors on my 72B and then realized just how worthless they were, and then removed them. They are in the way every time you raise or lower the top, were constantly flopping down at the worst time and just were not wide enough to block any sun. They mad it impossible for me to see a stoplight if the top was up unless I was three carlinks away from the intersection.

I wish they'd made some kind of plug-in arrangement because I do use mine a lot, but when I don't need them they're always somehow in the way.

If you do remove the brackets and/or the little sockets that hold the visor in place (near the center of the windshield), you CAN put them back with sheet-metal screws. Use stainless steel - I used some aircraft hardware I had sitting around, just be real careful not to strip the hole out too much and consider using silicon to help seal up the hole (and lock the screw in place).

One of the problems I've seen is the pop-rivets will sometimes start to give and the bracket will get some slop in it. The only way to tighten it is to rerevit, shim it, or go with screws.
