Installing fender bead-BJ7

When installing chrome fender bead is it correct to fold the tabs on the beading over the fender (or shroud), or to just push the tabs down between the loosely bolted fenders and then tighten the bolts. When trying by folding I am having difficulty with the bead staying in place when fitting the fender to the shroud, before bolting.

Thanks,

Robert

I'd venture to say they're folded over the fender, as there are several places (the rear shroud, for example) where there is only one (1) way it can be folded.

It's generally acknowledged to be a two (2) man job.

When I did mine, I had the fender on and bolted fairly snugly, but loose enough for the tab to slide up & down.

I grabbed the bead tab with a pair of pliers and pulled down HARD.

Then, without releasing the pull on the tab, and still holding the pliers VERTICAL, I swung the pliers sideways towards the FENDER.

When I had the tab sharply folded over the fender lip, I pushed UP.

The tab has the shape of a letter "Z" on its side. Sort of like this " |/| ".

Then tighten the fender and as the fender moves toward the shroud, the fender and shroud lip will close very tightly against the bottom of the bead.

It worked for me. 10 years later, my beads are still tightly against the shroud and fender.

Good advice from all. I might add if you "tape" the beads holders first, you won't scratch the paint. Also, I found it helpful to have a thin bladed tool, like a steel spatual, that I used to poke in the slot prior to inserting the bead, it helps to clean out any obstructions. You'll find it easier to "start" each holder first all along the length rather than completing one and going on as they tend to raise up. It would be nice to have someone help you.

Thanks for all the suggestions, however my solution was to rivet the flanges to the fenders and then install the fenders. It was very simple and now I'm finished with that problem.

On another note, the 3rd bolt from the front on the front fender is placed so it is nearly impossible to access. Instead of using the clip to screw into I used a bolt and nut. Even so, it was quite difficult.
