HS2 floats

Has anyone had any luck with the brass floats that Moss Motors sells for the SU HS2 carbs. I have been having float problems in both cars with HS2 carbs. I was crusing the Moss catalog and noticed that they have a brass float that is a different design than the plastic ones. They also carry the Grose needle valves. The Sprite has the Grose needle valves in it but with no adjustments for the floats I have continueing issues with one or the other carbs flooding I had aluminum tabs that were added to the hinge point of the floats that allow for some adjustment. They improved the problem but they are weak and the adjustments only last a few days then its back to one or the other flooding again. I am considering replacing the floats and needle valves and think the design of the brass float with the adjustment tab and grose needles might be the solution.

Your problem is the Grose jets, years ago they were ok, but for the last 20 years, almost everyone I know that has tried to use them is had the same problem problem you've having, take those things out and throw them away, call Joe Curto and get some of his viton tipped needle and seat assemblies. I build carbs for a living and would never use Grose jets in anything. When it comes to SU carb parts, Curto is the only source you want to deal with.

I tried the gross jets when they first came out, and like is said above, they worked great for a while, but then started to leak. I went back to the standard needle and seat, and no more problems.

Hello Anthony,

as you know HS type carburettors are non adjustable. However you can lower the level by adding a washer to the needle valve, effectively lowering it into the bowl. It's possible that the needle valve had been assembled in the past without any sealing washer?

Thanks everyone. OK its the Grose valves. They were in the car when I got it and somewhere I had read about them. Now what about the brass floats with the adjustable hinge tab that they are showing the catalog? They appear to be just an independant float with a seperate tab that attaches to the hinge point and the raised point in the center of the float contacts the tab to activate the needle valve.

I second the motion to check with Joe Curto. I just got my rebuild kits from him for my HS2's. The kits are complete with needles, great quality parts for less money than Moss or others. I'm a believer, thanks to Hap for his tip about Joe.

If your floats float they are prob just fine, check the adjustment though.

Anthony, if you look at the Mo$$ catalog page, the brass floats are only for the early, AUD 990 carburetors, found on '61 & '62 948's. They are not a replacement for the later syle plastic float.
Go with Haps recommendation and contact Joe Curto for the good needles and seats. He can probably fix you up with the plastic floats with the adjustable metal tabs on them, too.
