Headgasket , difference between late and early ??

I know that a late model TR6 head gasket has a tang sticking out the back but other than that what is the difference between the early and late gasket? I have a late model block but my gasket is marked on the package 1971-1975 which doesnt make any sense because a 71 is early model. My gasket has the tang but does not look any different than a early model gasket. I dont want to install untill I know I have the right one.

Allan, there should be a fine ridge around each of the 6 cylinder holes that extends down into the groove or recess that a late head has, as well as a tab to mark it. That is why the aftermarket copper gaskets won't work on a late head - no ridge. If your block has been sleeved, these grooves will accumulate lots of micro-debris and need to be cleaned out well before installing a new gasket. Old toothbrush and motor oil works well. Remember to apply sealant around the water jacket side (left) of the block and head. I bought new chrome-moly head bolts direct from APT Fasteners in Cal. and really like them. Half the price of same bolts from large Cal. LBC vendor.

I dont see any ridge, strange that the gasket has the tang (tab), Im going to order another head gasket. The gasket was out of a gasket set that I purchased a few years ago from NAPA. Thanks for the info.
