Don't assume the professionals always know...

So with some coaching from the TR8 mailing list and lots of TR6 carb rebuilding experience (with help from folks here especially Ken) I managed to get the TR8 running and indeed running on all 8 cylinders.

As expected after a rebuild I had to sync the carbs and after I did that she sounded different and suddenly found like 30 extra horsepower. Turns out the professional shops that worked on her when I first got her and then who replaced the heads both screwed up the sync. She was so much better/stronger/faster with the correct heads that I just assumed that the slightly offbeat exhaust note was correct when in fact the even cylinders just were not getting as much flow.

20 minutes of getting them properly sync'd and HOLY COW. Man she is fast now - like stupid fast.

Anyway - don't assume the shop will always get it right....

Good to hear Skip,

Sounds like the time I bought a car that was running on 7 cyls...after I got #8 fired up, it was like a different car.

Cheers,
Tush

My only other British car was a not so nice 73 B that I knew nothing about. The air filters caught on fire. Took it to a british shop, on the way home toast again. Took the carbs apart, put it all back together and HOLY COW, it worked. Satisfaction.

Enjoy it Tom. Imagine what it would be like with a tuneable FI?

Ridiculous speed, but not quite ludicrous speed!

But it's an 8... so they've already gone to plaid.

Warning: Slightly OT content follows.

This thread reminded me of my teen years. A friend had to borrow a car when his MGB was "sick". The loaner car was an old Datsun wagon that barely ran. It was so bad that shortly after we picked up the car we pulled to the side of the road to look at the carb. The fix was easy. Remove the underwear from the air cleaner. It then ran like a new car.

I guess the wife walked in at an awkard moment

LOL - getting the carbs right were probably the least of the concerns at that moment eh?
