So with some coaching from the TR8 mailing list and lots of TR6 carb rebuilding experience (with help from folks here especially Ken) I managed to get the TR8 running and indeed running on all 8 cylinders.
As expected after a rebuild I had to sync the carbs and after I did that she sounded different and suddenly found like 30 extra horsepower. Turns out the professional shops that worked on her when I first got her and then who replaced the heads both screwed up the sync. She was so much better/stronger/faster with the correct heads that I just assumed that the slightly offbeat exhaust note was correct when in fact the even cylinders just were not getting as much flow.
20 minutes of getting them properly sync'd and HOLY COW. Man she is fast now - like stupid fast.
Anyway - don't assume the shop will always get it right....
