1500 gearbox rebuild

I tried this on a couple other sites with no success. Someone said you guys had the answers. Perhaps you can help.

Gentlemen. After trying several options to correct erratic difficulty in shifting, I bought the Vic Brit box rebuild kit (layshaft with pin bearings, front and middle ball bearing, syncros, and cage bearing and gaskets.

I have the box broken down on the bench. The only obvious thing I can find wrong is the reverse gear and reverse idler gear teeth are chewed up and the two main ball bearings were sloppy. The old syncros look OK asside from some rounding of the teeth on the face of each. One of the ball springs was also broken so I will replace all of the springs and balls.

The bushing float on third gear is larger than spec but the fit of 2 & 3 bushings when on the shaft with the spring clip is to spec. Not sure what that means.

The old layshaft looks great but I will put the new one in and replace the pin bearings on the laygear.

Am I missing something? I'm afraid the new reverse gears and Vic Brit parts arnt going to do the trick. I was expecting the syncros to be warn, and to find more obvious visual wear, etc. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Synchros are not obvious when they are old and defective. They don't appear worn. You can try to fit them onto the gear cone and see how tight they feel, but this is best judged by a pro. I would replace them now while the box is apart. That way you don't have to take it apart again, with the accompanying disappointment and frustration of feeling like a failure when you just put a lot of time, money and work into it.

Just my dollar and a half worth (inflation)

Put new synchros on it and enjoy the best shifting your box is going to get... until I complete my plans to make a T-5 conversion kit for the 1500.

I have replaced the syncros as well as the bearings etc that are in the Vic Brit rebuild kit. I also took the 3rd and reverse gear hubs out and found one ball spring had broke in two so I am replacing the springs and balls as well.

Final step will be to check the tolerances as she goes back together. If there are problems there as well, I will replace what needs to be corrected before it goes back together. This is my second time pulling the engine/drive train. Thats enough.
