1500 front tranny oil seal??

All right, I'm confused. The diagrams from the Usual Sources show an oil seal and front cover on the 1500 trans. Thusly:

SPM-026_1.gif

My trans doesn't seem to have this. The bellhousing just butts up against the gasket. There was no oil seal or front cover when I took it apart...even if I'm unaware of any front cover that's actually there (i.e., press-fit inside the bellhousing or something I overlooked) there's certainly no room behind it for a seal. Parts 85, 86, and 87 simply aren't there in mine.

It never seemed to leak excessively before, so I just re-assembled it the same way I found it. But the next time it gets pulled (probably for a clutch, or my future Spitbox overdrive!) I'd like to know if I'm missing something that's supposed to be there.

Any ideas?

Nope. The bearing sits on the input shaft right up against the gear. There's just enough room for the oil flinger.

(Hey, I can upload pics from my phone by MMS...good to know--)

Left to right: caged needle roller, spacer, input shaft (with 4th synchro and helical gear,) flinger (thin metal washer partially hidden by bearing,) and the bearing. The bearing circlip sits on the outside of the box.

Here's an old pic of when I first took it apart...

The mating surface of the bellhousing is relieved just enough to fit the bearing poking out of the box, and the washer and circlip on top of that. There's no room for an oil seal. I tried.

Bill -

I just finished dealing with this same issue on a 1500 Spitfire gearbox, which is the same as your 1500. I found out that earlier 1500 gearboxes did not have the oil seal (Item 85). On later gearboxes, they added the oil seal. It is fitted into the bellhousing with the spring side of the seal facing the gearbox. Item 86 is also pressed into the bellhousing. It is called the front cover. It has the collar that aligns with the release bearing.

:thankyousign: Aha! Thanks, John...so my '76 doesn't have the seal, and the front cover (which I do have but didn't realize) isn't machined to accept one. Makes sense now!

Cheers!

here's the two of them.... the one on the left is the new style one with the seal, on the right is the older with the "screw" style.
I recently broke mine (the new style)and I have no idea why.
And I cannot find one anywhere.

Think 1500 Triumph Spitfire. Spit Bits shows it as available on their site. Scott Harper at Team Triumph in Warren, Ohio also has them.

trust me not much of facilities, its a 2 1/2 car garage. not much more.

just went and checked my 2 car garage and still no lathe - must be in the 1/2 I didn't buy. That's what I'm envying - and the ability to use it

I recognize that family of lathes. Is that one from MicroMark or did you buy your's elsewhere? I got the 7x14 from them and it surely was money well spent. However, I don't turn out pieces as nice looking as that on mine! That's excellent work!

Yes, this lathe was well worth the money. The biggest factor I found to nice results is the tooling.

So, does anyone have any idea why my original one might have broke off? Is this something common?
