Young neighbor killed

This kind of stuff just sucks and is so preventable! Excerpt from my morning paper:

<span style="font-style: italic">"On a lazy Sunday afternoon, a 14 year old girl died on a two-lane highway south of Edgewood, the car she was in apparently gliding along with too much speed and (the driver) with too little awareness of what lay ahead. Shianne Proveaux, an Edgewood middle school student, had not been wearing a seat belt."

"Authorities say her mother had been driving in excess of the 45MPH speed limit when she tried to pass a slower-moving vehicle on a blind hill in a no passing zone. A car had been on the other side of that hill, and to avoid a head-on collision, her mother swerved, over corrected and caused the car to roll. Shianne, untethered, was ejected (and killed)"</span>

This young neighbor girl is now dead and her mother is charged with, among other things, vehicular homicide. I drive the same road every day and every day I see people doing just completely stupid things, like passing in no passing zones, tailgating, speeding, etc. It is sad that stuff like this has to happen, but too many otherwise good people just don't take driving seriously enough! I suspect it is in part that the smoothness of the cars suspension these days and the fact that when driving a constant speed, there is a false sense of security when driving. We forget that we are guiding a 3000 pound missile down the road and that the slightest incident could send us out of control.

Just so sad for this local family.

Well said.

We talk about this constantly at the Auto parts store, seems common sense has gone out of driving, and interaction of/by pedestrians. Its a "ME" type of thinking, Teaching courtesy to drivers and pedestrians would go along way.

This is so maddening. I see the same type of irresponsible (i.e. selfish) driving every single day.

I just came back with the weekly supply of groceries. When I first got there, I had to dodge at least three cars that were driving diagonally across the parking lot. Then made my 15 minute drive home on a 45mph two lane blacktop.

I'm going 45 and being tailgated by two cars, a new Mercedes and an old klunker Honda. Ten feet clearance max.

Then in a no-passing zone, on a curve, with a rise ahead, BOTH cars pass me going at least 60mph. For pete's sake, it's a residential area, with kids and driveways all along the way.

I used my "fake phone cam" trick and slowed them down as they passed. But folks keep doing those stupid things with their 3000 pound missiles. Maddening.

Is there anything more irresponsible than NOT wearing seatbelts???

Perhaps allowing your kids to not wear theirs!

:iagree:

AMEN!

Profoundly sad.

As usual with bad accidents, a cascade of bad choices and mistakes by the driver.

Sorry to hear, I hope the family recovers . . .

That really is sad. Problem is, driving instruction and the tests here are too slack. People aren't taught how to drive properly, and not tested properly either. The net result is that these factors, when mixed with a lack of common sense and the "it'll never happen to me" syndrome, it's an accident looking for somewhere to happen.

Proper training is available: https://www.advanceddrivers.com

I get VERY frusted with drivers always being in a hurry.
Tonight I witnessed a driver almost causing 2 accidents because
they were driving to fast.I followed them,& layed on the horn as
I passed them when they parked.
They will probably won't understand what accidents they
could have caused.I would have been told to "mind my own business"
if I had confronted the person.

Or perhaps a lot more.

There was an incident nearby in Delaware last year. A driver did what you did and the nut fired back with a hand gun and killed one of his passengers. I guess he didn't care for the criticism. I used to honk also, but I don't any more - too many nuts with too many guns, IMO.

I have a gun but I'm not a nut (I think). Just for the record. But your point is well taken. I young female lieutenant I used to work with had just arrived in town with her husband. They were driving around town minding their own business and must have done something to tick off some nut (but they have no clue what they did). At a stop light, the guy behind them got out of his car with a baseball bat and proceeded smashing their windows! The got away, but the guy was never found. To this day they don't know what they did to cause the guy's rage. It's best not to provoke people if you have the option of just ignoring them.

I keep a copy of this (which I found here:www.piffe.com/inspiration/garbage-truck.php) on the wall in my office:

The Law of the Garbage Truck !

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.

Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so..... 'Love the people who treat you right.. Pray for the ones who don't.'

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it.

The only problem with that is I always seem to be in front of that garbage truck and seem to have a bullseye painted on my backside. Had a carrier on MY route total a truck because of another driver not paying attention. :wall:
