You may not want to ride a bike

The road going to my house is going to have that happen on day. We have a bike club that meets once a week. This is a road that has many blind curves. They will ride in large packs and not leave any room for cars to pass. I have come upon them coming around the curves and have been lucky no cars coming the other way. Have talked to Police about this but nothing has been done. I have been in bike clubs both for bicycles and motorcycles and we would always have some space between small packs so others could go around. I know the above was a race which is shows that the local police did not have things block for this to happen.

You know what? Bikers who hog the road & put both themselves & auto drivers in danger deserve what they get!!

IMO, bicycles should be licensed & have to pay insurance just like motorcycles!

We twins or what?? Agree!!

A San Juan to Mayaguez bike run on a saturday morning??- 100 miles.
2 hour staggered race start. One entire lane of the road blocked
by these ballet dancer looking bikers. It took me and the Mrs
5 bloody hours to drive 81 miles to our beach resort reservation.

I wanted to smash a few myself, with their brightly colored outfits
up in the air, hogging my road!!

There oughta be a law.

I was a biker for 40 years- we wore leather and it was one color-black.

Yikes. I guess those pesky bicycle riders were asking for it when a drunk American fell asleep at the wheel and plowed into them. Yea, they got what they deserved.

I was a rider, both bikes and motorcycles, and can agree that there are some that are idiots when the ride, just like people driving cars, but to blame the riders for what happened is a bit out there isn't it?

I didn't blame the riders for what happened in that article....I merely stated that bikers who are road hogs deserve what they get!

(& I've been known to ride a Norton from time to time!)

It's ironic:
If I drove a car in the same manner that I see many people riding their bicycles, this e-mail would probably have been sent from the Anamosa penitentiary.

I've seen many responsible bicyclists, but here in Iowa, my experience with this form of locomotion has been largely negative:
A total disregard for other vehicles, traffic signs, pedestrians, and property seems to be the norm.

Motorcyclists here, on the other hand, have impressed me.
They don't seem to have the attitude I've seen in other states, they're generally polite, and most of them have enough reflective material/lights to ensure their visibility to others...

...I do wish they'd wear helmets, though. Yeah, yeah, "Personal Choice","Freedom","etc.", but to me it just doesn't seem worth the risk. I keep dreading the day I see a Harley rider on the side of the road, dancing around in pain while clutching a forehead that's been bisected by the beak of one of our innumerable red winged blackbirds.Although you can bet, if that does happen, I'll try to take pictures:devilgrin:

Amen, Tony!

Why is it that bike riders will tell you that they have all the RIGHTS to be on the road (although as Tony says, they are not licensed/taxed in any way) yet they OFTEN seem to ignore the responsibilities...like obeying signs/signals/common courtesy?

Ray (who is sure I just made a few biker's short list)

I wonder how the one that wrapped himself round a tree on the Merritt on Sunday afternoon feels about "personal choice" now. Didn't see the accident, but let's put it this way - the ambulances were just sitting there...

CT is a no helmet state, and this muppet caused a 3 mile tailback that I sat in for a half hour. I was in the 6, and it was hot, so I wasn't feeling too charitable by the time I finally saw what the problem was...

Helmet and leathers should be compulsory, just like seatbelts in a car.

Alan- your not a fan of the young bucks on thee Asian racers in shorts,T-shirt and tennis shoes?

As a real Biker, it has been my riding style that:

Helmet and leathers should be compulsory, just like seatbelts in a car.

Helmet and leathers should be compulsory, just like seatbelts in a car.

Helmet and leathers should be compulsory, just like seatbelts in a car.

And for them skinny tire bicycles?

Helmet and leathers should be compulsory, just like seatbelts in a car.

Helmet and leathers should be compulsory, just like seatbelts in a car.

Boy - you're hitting home with me Tony. The road I take to work is a scenic "highway" (byway, whatever - it's a little road). The bikers are on there constantly, to the point that they've been trying to close the road to just bikes.

Anyway - the bikers constantly ride 3-4 wide. A lot of times they'll look back at cars and laugh (even though they're breaking the law).

I realize not everyone pulls over all the way when they pass, but the biker's latest tactic is really dumb. When they're in a single-file pack of 3-4 riders, the last one will look back for traffic. When a car gets within 2-3 car lengths away that last guy will suddenly pull over to the left and ride down the yellow line. I guess they're trying to cause traffic to move all the way to the left, but man it is stupid.

That Mexican accident looks inexcusable though. It looks like it was clear open road, just no good reason for it.

Helmets are the law here for kids and adults, motorcycles and bicyles.

Oh, and Scott... That road should have motorcycles banned for a period of time until they decide they can drive legally and safely. But it probably won't happen... I predict multiple people will die and they'll wrongly blame the cars.

All he has to do is try that trick one time with me....he won't do it again......& if they end up on their butts, their problem.

It was a hog, not a nipponese bike.

I'm not a fan of anyone that inconveniences me by their stupidity.

Your horn is the best weapon against cyclists. Especially if you lay on it until they move over like they're supposed to. It's amazing how loud and annoying a car horn gets after 5 seconds...

For many years during my young life my #1 hero was Bernard Hinault...

I lived to cycle...And did...
MANY thousands of miles.

I was almost killed 1/2 dozen times by motorists.
(Twice intentionally)

Cyclists have as much right to the road as ANY vehicle.

But they should ride the white line & if there is more than one...
They should ride pursuit. (in line not abreast)

And cars should give 12" for every 10 mph of overtaking speed.
(realize a good rider is averaging 20 mph)

The USA is near the bottom when it comes to respecting bicyclists...
In Europe that stuff isn't tolerated.

There are two problems I see with this story. Without seeing the accident, fault cannot be laid on the biker. Easily could have been a car driver not paying attention and ran him off the road. I've had similar close calls a couple times. Second, if the biker was wrapped around a tree, he could have been speared through the chest and a helmet wouldn't have done any good. He'd still be dead, and there would still be a traffic jam. I wear a helmet and leathers.

In Europe many children still think fresh fruit comprises dessert:devilgrin:

I often wonder if the feckless bicyclists I see around C.R. are actually the same people who, when operating a motor vehicle, blissfully ignore stop signs, no passing zones, and speed limit signs on U.S. 30.

There have been days lately when I've speculated that if characters from "Dumb and Dumber" were interbred with characters from "The Fast and the Furious", their progeny would consist of dead feet, lead feet, and (of course) the road raging fools who blithely attempt to precede their brethren in gaining Street Racer Heaven as they maniacally pilot their sleek Type Rs towards glory.

Maybe the rude bicyclist, inconsiderate motorcyclist, and reckless automobile driver are not three different people, but rather different facets of the same semi sentient entity?
