Worst Ever Cars by Top Gear

Oh now come on Steve. I saw Finding Nemo. The Lexus is no where near attractive enough to be compared to a CG fish anyday of the week. What I don't get about Lexus is why anyone would want to buy a glorified toyota with leather.

To my chagrin, I saw a fair number of cars that I have owned. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Here in NJ, those Lexi with the robotic drop-tops are very common. I agree with Steve....they have always reminded me of a carp on wheels.
I didn't see the Honda Element or similar Toyota Scion.....rolling SPAM cans to my eyes.

Agree with the Element and Scion.......my wife thiks that they are rather cute /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif

I pointed out to her that the original VW Beetle was cute ugly, and the Citroen 2CV was cute ugly, but that these Japanese examples are just plain ugly! Must say, however, that they are not as bad as that Pontiac Aztek.

Those cars listed by Top Gear are pretty dire, the Marina/Ital was a menace in wet conditions, the build quality of the Princess......well, let's just say that the words "build" and "quality" should never be used together when talking about that car! The landcrab that preceded it was a great design and a nice car to boot! The Allegro was ugly, and not too bad if you weren't in too much of a hurry. Problem was, they were used extensively as police cars in the UK. I drove enough of them to form a good impression, and the 1100cc versions were woefully under-powered. That quartic steering wheel was horrible though, whatever were they thinking?????

It is interesting how our tastes vary. I currently own a '56 Healey, '78 Mercedes 450SL, '89 Buick Reatta, a '63 Plymouth convertible, and, last but not least, a car that knocked my socks off the first time I saw it, a 2002 Lexus SC430. Maybe I don't run with people who don't like the Lexus, or maybe they are polite and keep their opinions to themselves, but the only comments I receive about the car are very positive. I also like the Audi TT and the Nissan 350ZX, both cars with similar "carp" shapes. Aside from our personal tastes in cars, some of the cars at the TopGear site were really BAD cars, not just ugly. Some of the ugly (in the eye of the beholder) cars weren't bad, simply ugly. Just my opinion--I am not knocking any other's opinion nor do I dislike them because our opinions are different. I like being around hot rodders and custom car builders--they rarely, if ever, criticize another's idea of "cool". By the way--I love the Lexus!

jayarbee,

No stepped on toes here. I think your list of cars is very desireable aside from the lexus. I love the mercedes, I wish my 79 450 SEL was an SL they make beautiful convertibles. And as for the Lexus I think it is cool that you like it and own one my own prejudices against such a monstrosity aside. To each his own right.

I might be wrong - but - I think those two designs are aimed at the female market. I think the Element is absolutely horrible looking, and the Scion is a diminutive (looking) version of it. My Mother thinks they're both great, as do other women around here. Seems to be a trend.

I think that list also highlights something about car names too. I guess marketers think we're all a bunch of dummies. Maybe we are. One of the new massive subdivisions near where I grew up is called "Belle Pond Farms", which is partly made up. A friend of mine grew up there, his last name is Bell. I asked him about the pond - he pointed out a hole the developers dug, in the shape of a pond, and there the legend started behind the name. Unfortunately the pond never did hold water, but it sounds good.

Here are some of the car names that make me glad MG had the TA,TC,TD,TF,MGA,MGA,MGC, etc:

<ul type="square">[*]Sunny[*]Carisma[*]Pride[*]Fusion[/list]

...just makes me wonder about the psychology behind the names.

One semi-hit/miss on the list was the Ford Probe (another dumb name). I guess they released it to the UK market in 1992 according to the list, but it was available here in late 1988 as a 1989 model. The original version was much bigger and a much better (I think) car than the later one. I bought one in '89 and put about 150,000 hard miles on it. Except for tires and brakes it was never in the shop - not once. It was comfortable, relatively nice to drive (for what it was), reliable, and had more storage space than the same-year Escort hatchback my girlfriend had. I drove in the '92 replacement and it was absolutely horrible in comparison.

I think a lot of the cars were chosen in part for attached snappy comments. I mean there were definitly some ex-Communist country cars much worse than say a Lexus or Ford Probe!

I nearly ordered the Golf (Polo} Harlequin. I guess that says something about me. I ended up not getting the job that would have paid for it, so I was glad that I held off on placing the order. It might have been somewhat hard to move in the tight times that followed.
