I might be wrong - but - I think those two designs are aimed at the female market. I think the Element is absolutely horrible looking, and the Scion is a diminutive (looking) version of it. My Mother thinks they're both great, as do other women around here. Seems to be a trend.
I think that list also highlights something about car names too. I guess marketers think we're all a bunch of dummies. Maybe we are. One of the new massive subdivisions near where I grew up is called "Belle Pond Farms", which is partly made up. A friend of mine grew up there, his last name is Bell. I asked him about the pond - he pointed out a hole the developers dug, in the shape of a pond, and there the legend started behind the name. Unfortunately the pond never did hold water, but it sounds good.
Here are some of the car names that make me glad MG had the TA,TC,TD,TF,MGA,MGA,MGC, etc:
<ul type="square">[*]Sunny[*]Carisma[*]Pride[*]Fusion[/list]
...just makes me wonder about the psychology behind the names.
One semi-hit/miss on the list was the Ford Probe (another dumb name). I guess they released it to the UK market in 1992 according to the list, but it was available here in late 1988 as a 1989 model. The original version was much bigger and a much better (I think) car than the later one. I bought one in '89 and put about 150,000 hard miles on it. Except for tires and brakes it was never in the shop - not once. It was comfortable, relatively nice to drive (for what it was), reliable, and had more storage space than the same-year Escort hatchback my girlfriend had. I drove in the '92 replacement and it was absolutely horrible in comparison.
