Re: UPDATE worrying noise
Tinster,
So far I have not found the final problem but I have had some luck. All six u-joints seem solid, though one on the prop shaft and one on the right inner axel have a very very small amount of play in it I think (it is so small I can't be sure it is play). One other thing I found was that two of the studs on the rear right wheel (the ones used to hold the wire wheel adapter on the drum) were a bit longer then the other ones on the car. The previous owner may not have cut them off enough when converting to wire wheels. I cut them down to near flush with the nuts (BTW they nuts are the correct ones for wire wheels). Now the "clunk" seems to be gone or at least not happening in the three drives I took today. The shake at 55 or so is still there but not as much and I took it up to 95 and the shake was gone at about 75 or 80. I am still not happy but I am starting to suspect the wheels. My next step it to get my TR3A out of storage and put the TR3A wheels and tyres on the TR4A. I know those wheels don't shake so I can confirm if the shake is from the wheels or something inboard of them.
More to follow.
