worrying noise

Re: UPDATE worrying noise

Tinster,

So far I have not found the final problem but I have had some luck. All six u-joints seem solid, though one on the prop shaft and one on the right inner axel have a very very small amount of play in it I think (it is so small I can't be sure it is play). One other thing I found was that two of the studs on the rear right wheel (the ones used to hold the wire wheel adapter on the drum) were a bit longer then the other ones on the car. The previous owner may not have cut them off enough when converting to wire wheels. I cut them down to near flush with the nuts (BTW they nuts are the correct ones for wire wheels). Now the "clunk" seems to be gone or at least not happening in the three drives I took today. The shake at 55 or so is still there but not as much and I took it up to 95 and the shake was gone at about 75 or 80. I am still not happy but I am starting to suspect the wheels. My next step it to get my TR3A out of storage and put the TR3A wheels and tyres on the TR4A. I know those wheels don't shake so I can confirm if the shake is from the wheels or something inboard of them.

More to follow.

Re: UPDATE worrying noise

Regarding the diff mounts. I looked at them and they all seem fine, but I am not sure how stealth the break that everyone is talking about it. Can it be seen from under the car or do I need a mirror and multi-jointed arms with extendable eyeballs at the end. Does anyone have a picture of what this diff mount break is all about (or some good words to describe it)?

Re: UPDATE worrying noise

Adrio if the upper rubber mount weren't in place you could see it, but as it is still in place you might be able to feel a split in the flat metal portion above the rubber mount.
It starts out as a split at the center, where the bolt passes thru. Then it may run completely from one side of the flat metal to the other.
If you can scrape around with a finger nail you might feel the crack. Check the right front. I don't think the rear mounting points are that prone to problems.

It would be worth checking the rear mounts, too.
Even though the mounting points are probably good, if the metal sleeve that runs thru the center of the one piece rubber mount is loose, it needs replacing. You'll get a similar clunk if you don't.
You can remove one of the rear mounts at a time if you leave the other 3 in place, w/o dropping the diff.
