Wiper Motor finish

Nother question, I have seen wiper motors with wrinkle finish and with plain glossy black finish. Which is correct? This is for a post 60000 TR3A.
Thanks, Tinkerman

I did my TS 27489 LO is shiny Hammertone Silver. The one I just finished TS 81551 L - I did in black krinkle finish. See the attachment. BTW, I used orange acrylic paint from an artists supply store ($2.00) to get the wire colour correct as original.

Thanks Don, I really like the wrinkle finish. As a matter of fact I odered some from Seymore. I have my instrument panel to do yet. Haven't started on the wipeer motor. I have several and hope to come out with one good one.
Cheers, Tinkerman

Read the instructions on the container how to use it. The two types that I have used ask to apply the spray in one fairly thick coat but no dribbles. It will be glossy at this wet stage. If you just leave it, it will dry smooth and glossy. To get the krinkle finish I had to wait till I knew that the wife would be out for several hours and I warmed up the oven to about 175 F, put in the part and the krinkle came right up. I had opened the kitchen windows and turned on the fan. By the time she got home the smell was gone and the part was done.

As mentioned, first follow the instructions carefully on the spray can for wrinkle finish paint, then experiment with what works best for you. I suggest practicing first on scrap metal until you find what works. Pay attention to the manufacturer's recommendations for how long to wait between coats and how long to wait for the wrinkle to show up. The good products I've used typically didn't develop the wrinkle quickly but took overnight.

Hi,

I'm not sure if it was true with late TR3, but I know the early TR4 wiper motors came with both matte wrinkle finish and hammertone finishes (that also has a rough texture to it).

My '62 TR4 originally had the latter type finish and I was able to get an exact match to the color with a medium grey hammertone paint that's offered in rattle cans by Rust-O-Leum (#7214 Gray). This paint is used only on the body of the motor, not on the mounting bracket, end cap or the gear box.

I think Lucas used hammertone paints in this application because these particular paints don't require primer and are supposed to seal pretty well to protect against rust. The wrinkle finish paints seem to be more prone to absorbing moisture and letting rust get started underneath.

By the way, if you disassemble the wiper motor for painting, be very careful. I managed to short mine out and still have a project to fix it. It looks great, though!

Lucas appears to have used a couple of different finishes by the mid-1960s. I've been told both hammer-tone and wrinkle finishes were common.

I have used a heat gun to accelerate the wrinkle process. Nice thing about speeding it up is you can quickly see if you like the results and strip it & try again if you're not satisfied. Think I did my dash center panel 2 or 3 times before I got what I wanted.

If you go with a hammertone finish, it usually comes in two tones of gray. The lighter tone is more authentic.

Geo, My wife has a heavy duty heat gun she uses on craft projects, think I'll try it, like you say you can always do it over.
Thanks to all for the info. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

I just re-did my wiper motor last week, and just painted it semi-gloss black. Looks like I'll be taking that apart and will be re-doing it in the crinkle finish. I can have it cook in the oven with the turkey on Thursday! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
