Because in our youth, we're subjected to things like this...

and told time and again just how wonderful they are until we finally arrive at the conclusion that if it doesn't look exactly like what it's supposed to be, it ain't worth looking at!

Yeah, I didn't appreciate Leonardo da Vinci or Claes Oldenburg's works until I'd gotten at least ten or eleven years under me.

...until then, I'd considered Michelangelo's Pietà to be the only "art" in existence. :smirk:

Back in the Dark Ages, I was a professional cellist. I once did a workshop for a college freshman class.

I played a work by JS Bach (18th century), follwed by a work by Ernst Krenek (20th century).

After, I asked the class which one they like the best, Bach or Krenek. All hands rose for Bach; no one liked the Krenek.

Then I asked, which one was more interesting, and kept your attention. Almost all hands rose for the Krenek. A couple students said "the Bach is easy to listen to and makes me sleepy". A couple students said "The Krenek kept me wondering what would happen next, and was really exciting."
