Back in the Dark Ages, I was a professional cellist. I once did a workshop for a college freshman class.
I played a work by JS Bach (18th century), follwed by a work by Ernst Krenek (20th century).
After, I asked the class which one they like the best, Bach or Krenek. All hands rose for Bach; no one liked the Krenek.
Then I asked, which one was more interesting, and kept your attention. Almost all hands rose for the Krenek. A couple students said "the Bach is easy to listen to and makes me sleepy". A couple students said "The Krenek kept me wondering what would happen next, and was really exciting."
