"50 Years of Midgets - A Spridget Event!!

July 18-22, 2011

In 2008 I was unable to attend the 50yr sprite jubilee in PA. So I opted to attend the event at Lake of the Ozarks. I honestly did not know what to expect from this event, but I figured that I would at least get to put a few faces with names of people I had met over the internet. It turns out that the event had a whole lot more to offer.

I had attend several large car events. For example MG2006, it was a good event with a nice venue, but with so many different types of MG's I had a little trouble meeting up with midget people. Many of the displays and tech sessions didn't seem very relevant. Another example is a regional Healey event I attended. It had similar problems as the MG event, but further complicating issues was the number of rather lethargic Big Healey owners. I'm not saying all Big Healey owners are lethargic, but there were a fair number at this particular event that weren't much interested in driving their cars, and really had no interest in anything that wasn't directly related to their car.

So when I went to the Lake of the Ozarks(LotO) event, I really did not know what to expect. I was very surprised and impressed. It was far from a polished event. It had its fair share of glitches, but those glitches showed the nature of most spridget owners. In general, we are a group of problem solvers that like a little adversity and can appreciate quirkiness. There are also a fair number of use that can laugh at ourselves.

The common bond of these spridgets is rather unique. At the LotO event there were perpetual tech sessions. Fuel pumps were replaced, carbs were tuned, suspension bushings were replaced, timing was adjusted, etc. Yet none of this was on the agenda. These were all things occurring in the parking lots out of necessity, courtesy, or curiosity. There was never a shortage of help and gawkers always felt welcomed. There were also spontaneous driving tours where groups of people decided to take advantage of breaks in the weather. The unplanned portion of the event was the icing on the cake.

The planned events at LotO were great as well. The gymkana had was a light hearted competition. There was no one out there badgering the judges. People were having fun and the spectators had a great view. The autocross had a similar feel, though people seemed to be taking it a little more serious. But since it was not sanctioned by any organization there was no stress. There were also events that i had not seen at any other car meet (such as "start the spridget competition"). Evening tech session were directly related to the cars we all drive, and the talk at the bar always came back around to our beloved LBC.

It was a very unpretentious setting were all makes and variation of spridgets/owners were welcomed. I'm looking forward to this years event in hopes that it recaptures some of the magic. I've made my hotel reservations, filled out my registration including the Road America Track Tour, the Autocross, Popular choice car show, and of course... the awards banquet.

This may be the last all inclusive spridget event for some time. I'm not going to miss it, and I'd like to see as many of you there as possible.

Nicely said, Trevor. I remember visiting with you briefly and though I did'nt stay at the hotel and had other commitments while I was there I had a great time as well. See you at Elkhart Lake!

Kurt.

Was a highlight for sure, even with my bad knee that was killing me. It is now steel.

Durn that was good times.

There should be some accommodations now that the dates have been moved away from the NASCAR event.

I will be there, vacation is booked, hotel is reserved, need to remember to fill out registration form & make reservation for Badger ferry once they start taking spring bookings online.
As you say this may be the last one for a long time & I don't want to miss it !

Jer, Make sure your hand brake works! I take that ferry frequently in Spridgets and Minis, and even an old Austin Ute. The boat can get rockin'

This will be one heckuva party!

Trevor, great writeup.

I'm getting ready, 5 speed transmission installed and running great.
I still have a bunch of things to do before I'll really feel ready to take a 4500 mile round trip.
Good thing there's 5 months to go...

List of things to do...

Need to do:
Send in the registration form
Replace or rebuild seats
Grease pack all wheel bearings
Replace brake soft lines, shoes, and pads
Clean up wiring and fuse block
Find a spare wheel & tire
Replace valve stem seals
Replace radiator hoses
Replace fan belt
Hook up speedometer with angle drive
Get an automotive GPS unit

Nice to do:
Replace carpet (have good carpet in a box)
Do body work, fix numerous small dents
Change front turn signal holes and rear under tail light area
Finish painting rest of car green

Probably forgetting a lot - I'm sure it will come to me.

OK, just made my reservations at the Victorian Village. They still got rooms at $99 a night. They charge the first night but that is refundable upon cancelation. You lose half if you cancel within 3 weeks of the date and the whole nights depeosit if within a week, but that is fair enough. My reservations are for the night of the 17th and then leaving out the 22nd. I still need to fill out and mail in the registration for the event. Got my vaction approved at work. I'm good now

You guys will have a ball up there, it's a nice part of the country. I wish I could say I'd be there, but as slim as vacations come for a 1 man shop, I'm gonna hold out for a race weekend up in that neck of the woods.

Hap, you can still have a presence at the event. Consider "sponsoring" an event or tech session (I'm sure the rates are reasonable... even for a one man shop). Or I remember many small LBC vendors and such supplying small door prizes in exchange for some free advert at the 2008 event.

Wish I could make it, just not in the cards for this year. Was the same with LotO for me, just couldn't pull it all together. Y'all will have a great time. Take lots of photos for the rest of us.

Don't worry about a spare tire. There will be at least one in our group. I've got a space saver at very least, and that's a trick to consider if you want to carry one of your own.
Find a spridget rim, then take that to your tire guy. He should have a spare 13" space saver tire on an old rim. Ask him to take the tire off its original rim and put it onto your spridget rim. .. Ta DA! Space Saver Spridget Spare.

My 5-speed is going in next week (thanks BillM) My reservations are made. No job, no vacation time needed.
RA here I come.

I think the 3+day road trip each way is a fun part of the trip. I'll see my sister in Terre Haute IN. and my long lost best friend from college lives 45 minutes from RA.

Hap, You can be a sponser for my trip.
Rick, A GPS, realy?

See you guys there.

I hear ya Trevor, but advertising is the last of my worries, I so backlogged it bordering on crazy, but maybe I could do a Acme hat, T shirt or something to show my support of you guys.

I have to admit it took a few years of me being pulled into the car show world (sitting on the board of two large car shows) this is not what fuels me in the hobby, I have sinced distanced myself from those very car shows, by giving up my board positions. Showing cars is just not my gig, but each to their own, racing and working in the shop are, sure I'll show up at a major show if it is close, but as hard as vactaion time comes, I'm not apt to go across the country for a big LBC show, I rather be at the race track. Oh for sure you will see me at MG2012, because it less than 100 miles from home. Once again, I hope you all have a ball, I'm sure Peter will be a great host.

This event is not much about the "car show" as it is meeting and sharing and driving (though not real racing). The actual static car show is only a small part of the event.
