Where were you 45 years ago today when you heard?

I'm with you silverghost. I was born in March of 63 so I was only 9 months old. I do remember the challenger and exactly what I was doing (So does a whole generation of school children who were all tuned in to watch the 1st teacher in space)
Isn't it funny how we can all recall those tragic events that we knew when we watched meant our world had just changed in front of our eyes. My Mom recalls the bombing of Pearl Harbor the same way y'all talk about the Kennedy assasination. I guess every generation has their moment.
I wish we had more positive events to learn these lessons from...mine was the first man on the moon. I went outside with my grandfather to see if we could see them. I was only 6 and knew that a great thing had just happened. Maybe it was only the excitement of my grandfather
I know I felt this again when they announced Obama as the next president...I truly hope you are right and that this is another great moment in American History that I can look back on with wonder and awe!

Ninth grade, walking down the hallway between classes - all I can remember is wondering why, how can something like this happen in the United States?

I am old enough, but for some reason I have no recollection of the event. I will always remember where I was for Challenger and of course 9/11.

I was a in 3 grade on an Air Froce base in France. I remember we were in the bunker hallway in the Nuke postion Drill everyday after lunch until Xmas.

Eighth grade, Cullen Jr. High, in Corpus Christi.

What I remember most was the funeral and John-John's salute as his father's body rolled by. Never will forget that image...

Interesting...I can remember Kennedy & 9/11 but haven't the faintest clue about Challenger!

I remember the Challenger as well as I was in a school taking the absentee and retake portraits, and students would tell me about the news when they came to the camera. It probably lessened the impact on me until I finally got home at night and saw the news replays.

On September 11, I was working in my office when I received a phone call from my ex-wife who knew that I did not have TV in the office, and probably did not have the radio on. After her call I had the radio on the rest of the day, and finally saw footage when I had to drive to the Harrisburg PA office of our company to pick up equipment. They had one small TV with rabbit ears on, and I first saw some of the images.

Looking back, both of those days have had major impacts on my outlooks towards the "permanence" of the US government, much like the fear of the communists did in my childhood. I have one of the reflective fall out shelter signs on the stairs to our basement as a reminder of the drills during my elementary school years.

Re: Where were you 45 years ago today when you hea

I was in 8th grade Civics class (of all places) and the teacher was called out of the class room. He returned after about 5 minutes and he was crying. He was also our high school football coach and a neighbor. He would be the last man in the world that I would ever guess could cry.

He then told us that our President had been shot and that we were to return to our home rooms for early dismissal.

He then led us in the Lord's Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance before sending us back to our fellow classmates. I believe that every other teacher did the same.

I'll never forget that month because I lost my father two weeks earlier.

Our country has never been the same.

Re: Where were you 45 years ago today when you hea

I was 13 and it was my little sisters birthday. The world stopped & since she was only 4 I decided from that moment on to celebrate on the 23rd and let the world grieve on the 24th. Such a terrible moment in time with so many world changing events.

I was in 3rd grade in Parkside Primary School. We were given the next few days off and I can remember sitting at home watching TV and saw it when Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald....

hmmm.

8th grade.

cathartic.

doc,ya showin ya age!, i was in 7thb grade, our ceramics class teacher mr, santapiatra just got done thumpin bernard morris the school bully for hitting another kid, yup back then a teacher could thump a kid if needed and not do time in the big house, the news came over the loud speaker, and they let all the students out early, a couple ah years later bernard morris was decapitated when he slid under a truck in a stolen lotus europa during a police chase.

It looks as though a few of us were in 8th grade that day.
