TR2/3/3A When the twA few TR6 gearbox questions.......

I have found another gearbox top shifter assembly that is not jammed like the one I buggered up. I am installing the gearbox top shifter cover assembly on to the bottom part of the gearbox: 1.When the 2 lever forks are are moved towards the middle then they are in the correct position to drop down onto the gears in neutral position ...correct? 2. I figured out a way to align the reverse gear into its slot on installation by using a dental pick to hold it into place and quickly removing it when installing the top cover. My question is at what point does the reverse locking bolt on the bell housing get tightened down? 3. Without having to wait weeks for a gasket for the top cover to bottom of gearbox mating surface what type of sealer could I use there....black hylomar or is the proper gasket the only way to go. Any advice is appreciated. Karl

The bolt on the bell housing must be tightened before the cover goes on. That is what holds the reverse gear shaft in position, and without it, the gear shaft cannot be aligned once the top is on.

You may have to shift the reverse gear and shifter lever in the cover into reverse positions to install the top cover...it's been a while, so I can't remember...except that it is a bit tricky. It may be the shifter lever goes reverse, but then slowly goes to neutral as the top goes down?? Maybe one of the other guys here can fill in my blanks...

If you plan to get the gasket by the end of the summer, any sealant will work. If you use any of the RTV types, though, use extra care to keep it out of the gearbox. It can flake off and block some of the lubrication paths.

Finally...don't throw out the other cover. The jam can be easily fixed.
